Hello!

I read this thread very carefully last week because I have/had the same problem as the person with the AFN.

After desperately searching for leaks in the cooling system (I found 2, the reservoir cap and the hose to the heater), the problem unfortunately still wasn't fixed.

Now I've replaced the crankshaft position sensor, and everything is working properly again.

The VW guys said from the beginning that replacing the head gasket would be pointless, because the cylinder head would definitely have a crack.
Hopefully, I'm wrong!

Okay, so far everything seems tight. There were no visible defects on the head. However, the gasket on cylinder 3 already looked quite worn. With a bit of imagination, one could have detected a leak there.

Okay, just mentioning it again:

Thank you for the tip!

Greetings.

Hi,

Okay, they just had the Euro signs in their eyes icon_eek.gif. The "friendly" people want 1500 Euros for a cylinder head... of course, plus installation. With other repair shops, you can sometimes get it for 600 Euros.

Hello Soave,

They love to tell the story about the crack in the cylinder head. They tried to scare me with that story a long time ago with my T3 1.6-liter diesel. The gasket was so bad that I had to add two liters of water every 20 kilometers on the highway. However, simply machining the head and installing a new gasket was enough. With my AFN, the coolant loss was much less. It's also running great now after the head gasket replacement (without machining) with the old head. I actually suspected that the two cylinder head bolts on the exhaust manifold side, near the second cylinder, had come loose. They definitely came out much easier than the others.
So: don't let yourself be intimidated!

PS: By the way, I used to hear gurgling and hissing noises in the heating system more often before the water pump was replaced. Those noises have also disappeared since the water pump was replaced.

Best regards, TM.

Hi,

There have already been hints in the forum that, after a certain time, the cylinder head screws can be tightened slightly, contrary to the manufacturer's instructions. It would be interesting to know what torque icon_question.gif icon_confused.gif

The cylinder head only needs to be resurfaced if there is evidence of overheating and the head has become warped. Otherwise, the force of the screws is sufficient to press the part flat.
