Hello.
"Can anyone help me? I have a VW Passat TDI Estate (station wagon) with 74 kW, manufactured in 2000. Since yesterday, the following problem has been occurring (and it's worse today): The ABS and ESP warning lights are constantly coming on, not always at the same time, but usually. The car feels like it's being braked, with a loss of power. I was driving on icy roads (-8 to -10 degrees Celsius), and there was a lot of snow and ice building up in the wheel wells, especially in the front, reaching all the way to the tires. I removed the snow and ice, but the problem persists. Where are the sensors located? Could they be damaged? I could barely drive above 60 km/h, and I could hardly climb a hill."
Thank you for any suggestion or advice.
Ernie.

Have you ever taken a look at the instruction manual?
That's intentional!

If the electronics detect differences in wheel speeds or wheels spinning too quickly (which should normally occur on smooth roads), it will reduce power or brake individual wheels.

Protected within the wheel hub.

Could they be traveling?

No. Not usually. They operate inductively and are not easily affected by even the most significant environmental factors. It could only become critical with metallic contamination.

Thank you for the quick response.

Of course, I read the instruction manual and know that the lights come on when the wheels spin. However, this behavior was no longer within the normal range and also occurred on road sections where there was no ice or snow. The power loss was dramatic; I couldn't drive faster than 50 km/h and felt like I was going to stall completely. When idling, the engine revved up normally, and the rolling resistance didn't seem higher than usual.

I just cleared all the snow and slush around the wheels and poured plenty of warm water over the wheel hubs, and it seems to have helped for now. However, the roads are so snow-covered here that I can't drive any faster than 60 km/h.
