Hello everyone,
during the return trip from Italy with 5 people and a full trunk.
The 1997 Sharan had 4 bicycles on the roof and it was 35 degrees Celsius in the shade.
The 110 horsepower engine unexpectedly went into emergency mode.
That means the maximum speed is 70 km/h.
The engine temperature was normal.
After turning the engine on and off, the original power was restored.
I had to repeat the same procedure for the next 1000 kilometers.
Perform 5 times.
During the visit to the workshop, no cause was found in the error memory.
In the past few weeks, without any luggage and at the maximum load capacity, the error has not reappeared.
occurred.
Does anyone have any idea what the reason might be?
Has anyone else experienced something similar?
Is there a fail-safe mechanism that activates when there is 'motor overload'?
Thank you and best regards,
Peter.

Hi.
In a "real" emergency situation (i.e., decided by the engine computer), it is my opinion that there should always be an entry in the error memory.
If your workshop says "memory full," then they are either lying (because they are overwhelmed by the interpretation), or it's not a real emergency mode, but "just" something else, for which there are countless possibilities. To narrow down the possibilities, we would need more detailed descriptions of the symptoms.
The fact that after the engine was turned off, the normal power was restored again, in my opinion, strongly suggests a "genuine" limp mode, in which there should be an error entry.
Theoretically, there's also a chance that the fault memory function or the diagnostic tool used by the workshop could be malfunctioning... Gruß Ulf

...or perhaps too much time has passed since the error memory of the engine control unit was last read.
After a few engine starts, and if the error no longer appears, the corresponding entry is deleted.
I can never remember the number of engine starts... at least it's more than 20.
Best regards, Rainer.

...it's possible that there were numerous restarts between the last occurrence of the error and the time the system was checked, which is why the error...
could not be read.
It's interesting that the error occurs at high temperatures and when the device is fully loaded.
It appeared frequently (a total of 5 times within 8 hours) and hasn't shown up for over 2 weeks now.
Could it be that the problem is...?
- is dependent on temperature (is the mass flow meter measuring incorrectly?), or
- due to high load (however the electronics determine that).
causes?
Best regards,
Peter.

Hi.
... 50 starts after the last occurrence of the respective error.
I had forgotten that .
If you make several (short) trips per day, the storage space might be completely used up after just 2 weeks. Gruß Ulf

Hello Peter, I have a TDI engine in my T3 bus. The intercooler is located at the rear and is cooled by a fan. I can turn the fan off using a switch, for example, when performing diagnostics. If I drive uphill in hot weather without the fan running, the engine control unit reduces power because the intake air temperature is too high. There are no error messages.
I can imagine that happening in a Sharan as well, especially with temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius and a full car.
A possible solution might be to inject water into the intercooler. I'm considering installing something like that in my van.
There are some posts on this forum about that.

Hello everyone,
Thank you for your replies. I can probably get a VAG-TOOL through a friend, and then I will read the error memory and measurement blocks myself.
Perhaps more will come out later.
Regards,
Peter.

Hello Peter,
I'm experiencing a similar problem when it's hot - the solution is currently unknown, but there's a strong suspicion about the cause.

Hello,
I would recommend checking the intercooler system for leaks in your situation. Based on how you describe the problem, it seems to occur when the vehicle is fully loaded. You were likely operating it under heavy load. The error mode is triggered when the difference between the target and actual boost pressure is either too low or too high. However, the error mode only activates when this difference persists for a specific duration (approximately 10 seconds). I suspect a small leak, as the error doesn't occur during normal operation. You should check this as soon as possible, because even a small leak can cause the turbocharger to spin at a higher speed in order to maintain the boost pressure, which can be detrimental.
Best, Ben.
