Problem description.
The shifting quality of the first and second gears has deteriorated with mileage. This degradation in shifting quality is noticeable across all operating temperature ranges.
Cause.
Damaged synchronizer ring coatings on the first and second gears, resulting in wear to the clutch teeth on the synchronizer rings, the sliding sleeve, and the shift gears.
Solution:
Carbon-coated synchronizer rings. The synchronizer rings should always be replaced together with the sliding sleeve. Depending on the wear pattern, the gears may also need to be renewed. In this case, the gearbox does not need to be replaced.

"Note:"
They are attempting to charge customers for this action. The VAG's stated reasoning is:
"The synchronizer rings were damaged due to gear changes performed with the clutch pedal not fully depressed. Therefore, no goodwill warranty will be applied." Tschüss
