Hi,

Get both from Westfalia; you can't go wrong with them. That's at least my experience with the G5.
|
Here's the current plan. I've already looked at the installation instructions... it seems straightforward. Next, I'll connect it to the fuse box and rewire three cables to the connectors on the vehicle's control unit (2 x CAN, 1 x brake signal).
I've just submitted an inquiry to Westfalia regarding the diagnostic function and trailer stabilization features. However, the diagnostic function isn't really that important, because what exactly is it supposed to show? If a trailer light isn't working, I'm more likely to just check it directly rather than connecting a computer. At least, the very inexpensive trailer kit from AC, which definitely doesn't have diagnostic capabilities, includes trailer stabilization. Therefore, I would expect Westfalia to be on the same level in that regard.
Erich Jaeger (not Jaeger Automotive) is recommended as an equivalent product in some forums, but the instructions clearly state that the device cannot perform diagnostics.

Hello Bertil,
May I ask how you arrived at that statement?
IrAm I in the right place?
Greetings.
Sure, here's the translation:
"Guste" is a German word that means "gust" or "gust of wind." It can also be used to describe a sudden burst of something, such as laughter or anger.

Hello,
As mentioned above, the inexpensive AC set is also supposed to provide stability for the trailer.
Quote: |
I expected that if the ESP control unit detects the trailer and reports it as "recognized," then the trailer stabilization system would also be activated.
|
According to the owner's manual for the Octavia:
Quote: |
A trailer stabilization system is activated when...
that the ESC control light (symbol) in the instrument cluster illuminates for approximately 2 seconds.
longer than the ABS warning light stays on.
|
...I would therefore consider that to be a "valid" indicator. Is it the same with your Passat, or is that also mentioned in the manual?
Westfalia electric kits seem to be quite difficult to find. Besides Westfalia (which appears to be a tool company, not an automotive one), I haven't found any affordable suppliers who actually provide a Westfalia electric kit for a Westfalia coupling.

Hi,
It seems that Westfalia-Werkzeuge is actually acting as a dealer for Westfalia-Automotive. Otherwise, you could try contacting PV-Automotive; I got a Westfalia electric conversion kit for my A6 from them a few years ago.

Here are some experiences I've had with colleagues when I had to enable the AHK (Automatic Headlight) function. With the "cheaper" ECUs (Engine Control Units), nothing changed with the ESP (Electronic Stability Program).

Dann hast du Glück gehabt. Da kenne ich gerade mit den Jäger Teilen anderes. Hatte aber auch bisher noch keinen Passat mit nachger. AHK in the fingers.

If the ESP and ABS lights indicate this (as shown in Jan's text), then the AHK ESP is also active. However, for some vehicles, you need to activate it in the braking control unit first (be careful... this is not entirely legal ). Gruß Bertil

Hello,
Okay, to wrap things up: The Westfalia electric kit is installed. According to the description, it's supposed to be diagnosable, but only with Westfalia's software. VCDS can't access the control unit, but it correctly displays the status in the overview (by clicking on the "installed parts list" in the vehicle scan). Also, the communication with the other control units works after unlocking (the parking assist shows a trailer, the car's rear fog light is disabled when a trailer is connected, turning on the rear fog light results in an error message in the instrument cluster, because the old trailer I used for testing doesn't have a rear fog light).
I didn't code anything on the brake control unit, because according to the VCDS developers, it's not necessary for the MK60EC1, as it's supposed to happen automatically. It works perfectly; as soon as a trailer is connected, the ABS and ESP warning lights display the behavior described above, indicating that the trailer stabilization system is activated.
The instructions are amusing... Westfalia wants to obtain the ignition power supply from fuse 4 in a complicated way (which, I believe, is related to the air conditioning). However, the instructions ignore fuse 19, which is actually intended for this purpose in the 1Z model and is even pre-wired on one side. Therefore, after taking a quick look at the wiring diagram (fuses 4 and 19 are connected to the same power supply), I installed it "correctly" so that the ignition power supply now reaches the trailer control unit, as it does in the standard configuration, via fuse 19.
Best regards,
