Hi! Besides many other problems, my Golf IV TDI PD, manufactured in March 2001, with engine code ATD, now apparently also has a problem with the engine.

Since an oil change service at the dealership 3 weeks ago (though it might be a coincidence), my car experiences a shaking or very uneven idle speed in the morning at the first traffic light on my way to the office. I think it's also related to the currently lower temperatures.

Since I only moved into this apartment in the summer, I don't know if the defect was already present before. The route is mostly slightly downhill for about 2 kilometers, so from the starting point to the first traffic light, it's mostly a matter of pushing the bike, often using cruise control set to 40 km/h because of the speed limit.

The engine isn't stalling, and it accelerates normally when driving. I haven't noticed any loss of power or smoke. Normally, the car is mostly driven on highways for long distances at a moderate speed (140-170 km/h), which is relatively gentle on the engine.

After the second traffic light, about 500 meters further on, and after a short, slight uphill section, the engine will stop shaking.

What could that be? I've read about the engine control unit (ECU) problems with the AXR engine, but the ATD should have a different ECU, right? I'll also stop by the dealer tomorrow, but who knows what he'll say again... icon_sad.gif

Hello Tom,

Do you have the ability to read measurement value block 13 of the engine control unit while the engine is idling?
The values shown here indicate the necessary differences in injection amounts required for a stable idle speed. If the values differ significantly or fall outside the tolerance range, your pump-nozzle elements may be defective.

Best regards, Rainer.

Unfortunately not, I'm not tech-savvy either, so I'll probably have to rely on a repair shop. I'll just stop by there today and see what they have to say.

If it's actually the PD elements, this is likely going to be an expensive fix. Then, I'll get rid of this car at the next opportunity, and never buy another VW again. Hopefully, there won't be enough gullible people left to buy into their metal-clad delusions of grandeur in the form of a Touareg or Phaeton, when they can't even manage to make a decent Golf or Polo. Poor Germany.

"I also experience this idling/part-load fluctuation, even when the engine (ATD) is still cold and running at just under 1200 RPM. And the idle stabilization system reports a maximum difference of only 0.2 mg/H." Since it's likely a PD issue, it probably stems from the active vibration damping system in the gearbox...
Perhaps slightly increase the injection volume to reduce the tendency for jerking.
I've also suspected the transmission/axle drive, as the play in the drivetrain can contribute to the jerking, especially under these load conditions (rolling).
Who knows better?
Vigorously shaken.
