1.4 TSI CAX Idle Jerking/Surging

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I'm from Austria. In my fleet of vehicles, I have some older TDI and TSI models, and it was because of the problems these "problem children" can cause that I finally invested in a professional diagnostic system.
Currently, my A3 is experiencing the problem mentioned in the title, and neither my one-man workshop nor I can figure out the cause of the issue.

Here's a brief summary: Audi A3 8P 1.4 TSI, manufactured in 2008, purchased in 2012 with approximately 50,000 km. Timing chain replacement (without tensioner) at 125,000 km. At 175,000 km, the water pump and timing chain tensioner failed, requiring a complete timing chain replacement including the tensioner. Not operated under the longlife service interval; auxiliary heater used in winter.
In April, at 200,000 km, the engine suddenly developed a very unstable idle without any warning. The engine shakes and sounds "rough." The RPM drops to approximately 640 rpm. After a few seconds, the engine recovers and runs smoothly at 720 rpm. This cycle then repeats after about 10 seconds, or sometimes not at all. The engine accelerates normally, and no hesitation is noticeable even under light load conditions.

OEAMTC (Austrian Touring Club) diagnosed a misfire on all cylinders, particularly cylinder 3. The ignition coils and spark plugs were swapped to see if it would change anything, but there was no improvement. A new coil brought by the owner also didn't resolve the issue. The throttle body was cleaned, and the intake manifold was checked for vacuum leaks – still no improvement. The driver ultimately decided to take the car to a workshop based on this diagnosis.

In meiner Werkstatt wurden probeweise beide Ansaugluft/Temperaturfühler und der Benzindrucksensor getauscht, keine Veränderung. Danach die Ansaugbrücke abgebaut und ein Einspritzventil ersetzt. Keine Erkenntnisse, außer das der Ansaugtrakt völlig verrußt ist. Auto mit dem Hinweis das Beste wäre es den Kopf zur Reinigung abzubauen heimgeholt. Zuhause die Ansaugkanäle mit diversen Lösemitteln und Kunststoffbürsten „fast wie neu“ gereinigt. Wagen "It pulls much better, the RPM only drops to 680 rpm now. The actual problem still persists, but there are no more misfire codes in the error memory!"
Recently, I replaced the high-pressure pump and the filter. The pump had been making unusual noises for a while, and after being idle for a long time, the engine wouldn't start properly on the first attempt – that issue is now resolved with the new pump.
What remains is an unstable idle state, lasting approximately 10 seconds, followed by a drop in RPM, shaking, and then stabilization after another 10 seconds. When the air conditioning is on, this entire process occurs with the RPM being roughly 100 RPM higher.

Unfortunately, I have no idea about the engine mechanics themselves, but what do the adjustment values for the lambda control system indicate? At least there, you would see if there are any errors in the fuel-air mixture preparation.

I would also like to see if there's something like a "load" measurement block, or observe the current injection quantity.
It's important that an auxiliary component, such as the air conditioning compressor, doesn't draw more power than usual.

I once did something crazy – I went on vacation.

I experienced the same problem with an Audi A3 manufactured before 2009, equipped with a CAXC engine. It exhibited uneven running and occasional, sporadic misfires that occurred across all cylinders.

The cam bearing retaining ring had detached from the camshaft.

The camshaft has been replaced.

See TPI 2023011/2.

Since March 2009, optimized camshafts have been installed.

It took some time, and it's now my son's car, so it's not always readily available.
The engine still exhibits the same behavior even after a cold start, so I don't think the lambda control is playing a role. (!!) The learning values of the engine control unit have been erased multiple times, but it never made a noticeable difference.
The belt was loose, and neither the water pump, alternator, nor compressor were rotating unusually stiffly. The alternator was also disconnected via the D+ signal to ensure it wasn't being rhythmically controlled by the engine control unit. The idle speed is slightly increasing, but the behavior of the engine isn't changing significantly.

There's a channel in the engine control unit (ECU) called "load request," and its numerical value increases slightly at the same time that the engine speed drops. Similarly, the injection times increase slightly. This all happens until the engine speed returns to its optimal level. However, both the engine speed and load regulation always remain within the target range. The older ECU doesn't yet have measurement channels that describe the desired state.

The idle speed never drops below the "acceptable" value, so the car is drivable under normal conditions – finding a solution to this problem would be quite interesting.

"The compression/pressure loss hasn't been checked yet. Could we see anything about it in the knock sensor readings?"

Indeed, CAXC 03/2008. There was nothing to find in the vehicle's history up until 2012; we have owned it since then.
During the high-pressure pump replacement, the cam was visible in the center of the bore on the intake side. Is there a way to assess the condition without removing the valve cover?

This error has been cleared and hasn't reappeared so far; it likely occurred during troubleshooting.

The oxygen sensor was replaced due to recurring error messages. The engine misfire has become less and less frequent and is now completely gone. I have never been able to identify any connection with the parameters of the engine control unit.

It was probably just the dirty air intake all along...

Today, our paths diverged at kmStand: 322000; the rust forced me to stop.
The error described above has not occurred again. To date, the engine has "consumed" two timing chains and one variable valve control unit, and another chain replacement would have been due. The oil consumption until the end was approximately 1 liter per 10,000 kilometers.
