Vent Flap Actuator - V213 - Replacement & Repair

Hello everyone,

Currently, I'm experiencing the following problem with my Passat 3C 2.0 TDI (140 hp), manufactured in 2006, with a hatchback body style:

The VCDS software displays 3 errors related to the ventilation/climate/heating control motors: V158, V71, and V213. See the attached log file.

I'm actually only interested in the expansion of the V213 stepper motor.
It is located to the right of the speedometer and is responsible for controlling the ventilation flaps in the center. (See image: exploded view).

My question is whether I can access the V213 servo motor by removing the speedometer and the radio. This seems like the easiest way to me. Has anyone had experience with this? Or could someone perhaps offer some advice on how to remove the servo motor?

The errors are sporadic. Consequently, the cause could also be related to the wiring, for example.
If no one here can provide you with information about the expansion/upgrade, I recommend obtaining the relevant repair literature (RLF) through VW-ERWIN.
Otherwise, I would.
- delete the errors,
- observe when, during what activity, and in what order they reappear;
- Check the individual actuators using an actuator diagnosis function.

First of all, thank you for the response.

Unfortunately, I forgot to mention in my previous message that I'm hearing a mechanical "scraping" sound from the V213 area, occurring every 0.5 seconds. Also, no air is coming out of the air vents in the center console. When I clear the V213 error code, it immediately reappears.
The observation is that the motor is running, but the mechanism is not opening the valve for the air outlet. Therefore, I suspect that either the motor is faulty or there is a problem with the mechanism after the motor.

It would be interesting to know the exact type of the V213 servo motor beforehand, so I can install the new one directly.

Yes, that's right, I had forgotten ERWIN. After I made the entry, I happened to come across the Tec-Verlag website, where you can also find original manuals for VW cars. It's difficult with the servo motors, because they are usually not available for sale in the aftermarket.

You will likely have to expand the system. I had a similar issue with my former Audi. After disassembling and opening the actuator motor, I found that the grease on the mechanism had hardened. I cleaned everything and lubricated the mechanism with new grease. After that, everything was working properly again.

Perhaps that could also be an option for you, without having to install a completely new motor.

Yes, it makes sense now not to buy the motors right away, but maybe there's just a lack of lubrication in the mechanism.

Unfortunately, my concern is that I may have to completely remove the entire control panel to access the V213 actuator.
Therefore, my initial question was whether simply replacing the speedometer and radio would be sufficient.

I'll probably just try it. Because that annoying noise, lasting only 0.5 seconds, becomes unbearable in the car over time.

Try accessing the motor from below. That's how I did it with my A4, model year 2005. I just had to remove the lower panel, and then I could reach the motor.

Yes. Usually, there's a cover or compartment located under the steering wheel. If you've removed that, you'll probably already be able to see the engine.

On the Tec-Verlag website, I bought the "Climate/Heating" instruction manual as a PDF for about 16€, which explains how to replace the V213 unit. However, it doesn't explain how to remove the control panel; instead, it refers to a separate book for 34.90€. I'm quite annoyed because the most difficult part is removing the control panel.
