The original parts number (VAG part number) consists of a 9-digit numerical sequence.
The first group of numbers usually indicates the type and model, except for the part numbers for the engine, transmission, generator, starter, and ignition system components, which are specific to a particular unit.
The first number in the middle group of numbers indicates the main group, while the two subsequent digits indicate the subgroup.
The last group of numbers represents the actual numerical part number.
Changes to an original part are indicated by one or two letters in the 10th and 11th positions. Indicated as the original parts number.
Important: 100% guaranteed: When replacing electronic control units, the function is only ensured if the VAG part number of the hardware and the VAG part number of the software match the previously installed part.
Adjustments and codings may need to be adapted using software such as VCDS.
Before removing a control unit that is still functional, it is always advisable to create an archive of a full system scan.
Examples:
038 906 018 BA (VAG part number for engine control unit for 1.9 TDI)
4F0 905 852 B (VAG part number for steering column control unit, Audi A6 4F).
