Lately, I've been hearing contradictory statements more and more frequently.

For those who are swapping tires: on front-wheel drive vehicles, the better tires should be placed in the rear.
2. The other team no longer changes the tires; instead, they run them down to their first wear point.

Ich tausche bei jedem Wechsel von WR auf SR und natürlich umgekehrt die Räder seitenweise. SAs always.

How do you do it?
Viele Grüße
Andreas

Hello.

Do it the same way as I do and just replace things. icon_wink.gif I've been doing it that way for 25 years.

In my case, the better ones always end up on the drive axle.
I need a tire with better tread for the drive axle on my VW (front-wheel drive vehicle).
I am certainly aware of the argument about the better handling on the rear axle icon_twisted.gif.

That's also my guiding principle when it comes to front-wheel drive vehicles.

Hi!

I do it that way too.
The tires are directional, which means they have to be mounted in a specific direction, and that's why the ones with more tread are put on the front axle of the Golf, which has front-wheel drive.

Otherwise, when it snows, I can't get my car out of my driveway.

"And when there's snow or other unfavorable road conditions, I drive carefully anyway. The Golf also handles very gently and predictably, and it's easy to regain control if it ever starts to slide. But that rarely happens to me."

Hmmm... I don't change tires, but rather switch between summer and winter cars, and vice versa. icon_biggrin.gif

Here's another way to do it:

If I ever forget to change my winter tires on my Golf, or if it snows again in May,
Then my T4 pickup truck comes into play.
He always uses heavy-duty winter tires.
If I don't go to work, no one else can get there either, so I might as well stay home.

For tires without a directional tread pattern on vehicles with identical tire fitment all around, I rotate them diagonally between the front and rear every season. This means that the rear left tire goes to the front right, and so on. This has the advantage of ensuring that the tires wear down almost evenly, preventing effects like "cupping" or even reversing them. Another argument in favor is that the entire set of tires will be worn out at approximately the same time, avoiding the situation where you have two worn-out tires along with two previously unused tires that may still have good tread but are simply old.

Here's how I do it with my Swift and my dad's car. Both have tires without a specific direction of rotation, but instead marked "inside/outside." My mom's Jimny uses all-weather tires year-round. It has never been off-road and probably won't be. There are no options for my Smart because the different tire sizes front and rear, along with their specified direction of rotation, prevent it. However, due to the Smart's notoriously tricky handling on wet or slippery surfaces, it has the best winter tires in my entire fleet.

It has nothing to do with the type of drive system. The rear axle is always the one that follows the track, and anyone who has ever pulled the handbrake on a slippery surface knows what that means: the vehicle immediately loses traction at the rear. Whereas it remains relatively controllable even if the front wheels lose grip.
That's why the better profile should always be on the back.

In my opinion, this is also the only sensible approach. Only if you drive so little that the differences between the front and rear tires are minimal when they are switched, would it perhaps be acceptable to break the above rule in order to wear down the tires evenly over the long term.
But ultimately, you don't gain anything from it, except perhaps when running very low mileage.

"I don't swap my tires around either; the wear pattern on my old set taught me that. The front stays in the front, and the right stays on the right. If the fronts are worn down, I move the rears to the front, and put new tires on the rear." My tire dealer recommends the same approach.

Evening.

Since approximately 75% of the braking energy is dissipated through the front wheels, I've always put the better tires on the front for years. However, I also don't use excessively worn tires; I replace them when they reach 4mm in winter.
