Is the wastegate opening audible?

Hello.

Da ich meinen 1Z noch nicht lange habe und das der erste TDI ist den ich fahre, hätte ich mal ne Frage zum Wastegate. Bei mir ist ein leichtes Zischen zu hören (im Innenraum) so ab 2000umdr/min und aufwärts, also wenn der Turbo so richtig ingange ist. Hab den Ladedruckverlauf schon mit VAGCOM kontrolliert und der Druck wird gut und bei Zeiten erreicht und auch ohne Probleme gehalten. Ich hab auch alle Schläuche nachgesehen und da auch keine Undichtigkeiten endecken können. DOkay, my question is, is what you're hearing, this audible hissing sound, accurate ? I mean, a wastegate should be able to produce something like that, right ?

Hi Jan,

You can't hear the wastegate hissing because the "pressure equalization" happens inside the turbo. If you do hear a hiss, it could be coming from something like a leak in the turbo downpipe gasket. I think you should check the pressure lines and the lambda sensor. The hissing could also come from the exhaust! My new muffler actually makes slight hissing noises under full load (->no leak!).

ich tippe hier eher auf Pulsation in der Druckleitung, d.h. minimale Druckschwankungen mit hoher Frequenz, die dieses Zischen verursachen. Im Grunde völlig ungefährlich, aber eben eine der lästigen Nebenerscheinungen der Turbos, besonders wenn er ordentlich Druck machen muß. Die heutigen akustischen Anforderungen der Motorenhersteller werden immer schärfer und so beschäftigen sich ganze Rudel von Akustikern mit diesen Problemen. Und wenn bei der Auslegung der Druckleitung, nichts mehr hilft, bekommt der Verdichteraustritt (Druckstutzen) einen Schalldämpfer verpasst. Hat vielleicht der ein oder andere von euch schon in neuen Turbomotoren gesehen. By the way, this has nothing to do with the turbocharger whistling sound, which is more likely caused by an imbalance in the rotating parts.It is also known as a 'turntable' among professionals.

I've already checked all the exhaust pipes several times. All the connections seem to be tight. Otherwise, you should be able to see damp spots. It's definitely not a leak in the coolant system, because the hissing sound starts right at the turbocharger (I had a hole in the spray bar before, and it was much easier to locate there). I guess I'll have to take a look at the downpipe. It seems to be the original exhaust on the car.

Hmm... maybe, but since I seem to be the only one hearing this hissing sound, I have to assume it's a defect. However, if I don't find anything, I'll feel reassured by your explanation.
