If you plan to own your VW vehicle for a longer period, consider VCDS as an investment that will pay off in the future. I bought it in 2015 and regret not having purchased it sooner.
My cars are also all from the early 2000s and don't have a CAN bus. I've owned a VAG 1551 for over 20 years, but using VCDS makes many things much more convenient. Sommer: A4 B5 Avant 2,5 TDI Quattro Facelift (AKN silber)

Hello,
It sounds like a WFS (Warm Fuel System) issue, but the only way to be sure is to read the error codes from the engine control unit's memory.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any companies that fit the description. Perhaps the user @Bloesch can help you. However, I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding something.
A chip tuner should be able to disable WFS, or you can simply purchase an identical engine control unit (ECU) that already has WFS disabled.
Best regards, Rainer.
PS: Thanks for the coffee! X

I've now found a workshop that can read [something - the context is missing].
Is it possible to do this while the engine is running or with the ignition on?
Currently, I can only start the car a maximum of once per week.
If I have it physically present, turn it off, and then it stops working...

Hello.

I would be surprised if that's possible when it's installed.
Surely the person who can disable the WFS should be able to answer that question, shouldn't they?
My suggestion would be to obtain an identical used engine control unit (ECU) and have the Waste Flow Sensor (WFS) deactivated in it.
Best regards, Rainer.

It's working again.
Key number 2 appeared today. With that, it's working.
When switching to key 1, it turns off as usual after 2 seconds.
I then drove the car into the garage, and it displayed an error message: "1176 key." I have an appointment on Thursday with another garage; they're going to try to copy the existing second key onto the original first key.

Alternatively, you can directly attach the intact transponder to the reading coil... Sommer: A4 B5 Avant 2,5 TDI Quattro Facelift (AKN silber)

"Until someone can plausibly explain to me how an RFID chip could simply break (the key was only used a maximum of two times), I can't afford this fiasco with an automatic transmission and the problems with the garage, since the T4 is too old. No way, no second key – I wouldn't dare."

Hello!
Yes, I agree with you.
I would also like to create one or two backups there.
Because if the replacement transponder also fails, then you're in trouble.
Hmm, I haven't done it myself yet, but years ago while browsing through VCDS, I saw that there seems to be a function for programming transponders like that.
Hmm, it's been a while, but back then, car keys or spare keys used to have a small black plastic strip with some numbers on them.
Do you have that? Grüße, Steffen!

It depends on what information you have about the car.
"There should have been a small tag attached to the keys with a four-digit code on it; that's the login code. However, for some older devices, it's possible to read out (or have someone read out) the login code via the K-line interface. Someone in your area would need to do that."

The car is running again.
I finally found a garage that could read the error codes. The error code was XY = faulty key.
That same week, my grandfather actually found the spare key that had been missing for years.
I went to a Turkish colleague who runs a shoe and key service business.
He then tried to read the old key, but there was no signal, so it was completely dead.
Therefore, the issue was that the car would occasionally run again in October/November, despite the problem.
Then we loaded the second key and it's running.
We copied that.
cost (RFID chip: 20 euros)
work (30e)
Okay, so I have two keys again now.
Therefore, the WFS can remain in place because I still haven't found a programmed MSG (Message Sequence Number).
Best regards.
