V6 Timing Issues & Problems: Troubleshooting Guide

Hello everyone,

I recently bought an AFB engine to install in my boat. It came from a vehicle that was involved in an accident, so some of the attached components were quite damaged. However, I've managed to find replacements for all of them (*bay is a great help). The previous owner had already purchased some new parts, such as the camshaft pulley for the right cylinder bank. Therefore, the timing belts are now worn out. The problem is that I don't have a gearbox to use to set the crankshaft to Top Dead Center (TDC). Although the marking is visible on the sprocket, the corresponding mark is missing. Are there any other ways to do this?
The second problem is the position of the speed sensor, since the transmission is missing. Does it matter where it's mounted (when looking at the circumference of the toothed wheel)? What distance does it need to be from the pins on the flywheel?

I'm not quite ready to think about all the other potential problems yet. For example, there's no immobilizer. Is it possible to bypass it or trick the control unit somehow? Fortunately, the wiring harness was included.

Based on what I've read about the engines so far, this whole endeavor will probably cost me a lot of gray hairs.

Remove the spark plug from the first cylinder, insert a plastic straw, and set it to Top Dead Center (TDC). Then, you can attach a suitable marker using a small piece of grain (e.g., on the timing belt pulley-crankshaft pulley-engine block, or somewhere on the crankshaft). You'll probably need a crankshaft anyway.

Unfortunately, I can't say anything about the other things.

Yes, I've also had the idea about using a straw. That's probably how I'll do it. The pipe thing is a nice idea too, but where would I get one if not by stealing?

Here's another question. What is the pressure of the auxiliary fuel pump? Can I use one from a gasoline engine? Is there a pressure regulator between the vacuum pump (VEP) and the fuel pump? Or does the VEP have enough suction on its own, and can I simply eliminate all that other stuff?

Here's a short warning regarding the installed VP44 injection pump: this component is sensitive to air in the fuel supply, and exposure to air can render the injection pump inoperable in a short amount of time.

I therefore recommend a VW repair manual from Erwin (siehe Fehlerdatenbank) or other relevant literature that is specific to your engine. The investment is worthwhile.
