VCDS Beta with SFD Support – Information Page

The Volkswagen Group has introduced a new safety feature, SFD (Protection Vehicle Diagnosis), with the MQBevo platform. This is being implemented in accordance with EU regulations 2018/858 or 2021/1244, and governs secure access to safety-critical components, such as driver assistance systems.

✅ Access to areas not related to SFD remains unrestricted, as before, via VCDS.
✅ For SFD-protected areas, instead of the previous 5-digit security code input, a digital key (Token) must be created and processed by the manufacturer for authorization.

Can VCDS create and process SFD tokens?
Yes! With the release of VCDS Beta 26.5 (and higher), VCDS can, under certain conditions, generate and process the tokens required to unlock an SFD-locked control unit via a data connection to a VW server.

What does the beta testing phase mean?
Following an internal testing phase, the new SFD feature will be made available to end customers for trial use. This feature has not yet been officially released and is intended for evaluating potential errors.

What requirements must be met?
The requirements are diverse and must be fully met, due to the legal regulations regarding the unambiguous identification and storage of the user.

One-time setup procedure:
- Original, licensed & registered Ross-Tech interface (HEX-V2 or HEX-NET) in the professional version (unlimited), purchased after 01/01/2023.
- A separate, paid SFD upgrade will be available later for older HEX-V2 or HEX-NET devices.
- The registered VCDS license holder must be registered and activated with their interface in the official Ross-Tech forum.
- In addition to the VCDS software license that is compatible with SFD, a personal registration with Ross-Tech is required.
- A unique password (minimum 10 characters, characters: a-z, A-Z, 0-9, as well as * - _ = +) must be set, and it must be used every time SFD is used.

SFD Usage Procedure – Step-by-Step
The system usage consists of two stages: SFD server authentication and unlocking SFD-protected control units.

Level 1: SFD Server Login
- Connect the interface on both sides, start VCDS, and click on "Start SFD Session" under Applications.
- Enter your password, click "Start SFD Session" again, and wait for VCIConfig to open. (This may take some time due to server connections.)
- After verifying the access authorization, the activation process can begin.

Level 2: Enabling of control units via SFD
- First, create and save a vehicle scan.
- Then, unlock the CAN gateway (address 19): In module 19, go to "SFD" and click "Online unlock". This unlock will remain active for 90 minutes.
- For Gateway models from MJ 2024 onwards, which have an additional "Restricted or Read Only" mode (R), this function must be disabled via the corresponding adaptation channel.
- Then, unlock the desired control unit on which you will be working.

Sounds complicated? It is – but that's due to the legal requirements of the EU and the strictly regulated procedures of the vehicle manufacturer.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Does my vehicle even have SFD protection?
SFD was introduced with the Golf 8 (2019) and now affects all models of the VAG group. Starting with the 2024 model year, SFD2 is available for safety-critical functions, but it cannot yet be activated. SFD can be identified in the vehicle scan: affected control units are marked with "SFD" or "SFD+SFD2" after the VCID number.

❓ Which VCDS interfaces are compatible with SFD?
An original, licensed, and registered HEX-V2 or HEX-NET interface.

❓ Does using SFD involve any costs?
As long as an SFD subscription is active: No. After the beta testing phase: SFD subscription upgrade for ~50 € (3-FIN/10-FIN) or ~100 € (unlimited) per year (final pricing subject to change, but definitely affordable).

❓ Do I need an SFD subscription?
Yes, in addition to the existing VCDS software license. Professional interfaces (unlimited, purchased after January 1, 2023) include a 1-year SFD subscription from the date of SFD registration. Users with 3-user or 10-user licenses can purchase a separate SFD subscription later.

❓ Who can subscribe to an SFD plan?
Every VCDS user with an unlimited version. Important: The subscription is registered under the user's personal name (individual), not a company. SFD subscriptions are personalized and non-transferable – the entire process is logged.

❓ I have a 3/10 limit interface – can I subscribe starting June 1, 2026?
No, unfortunately, not during the beta testing phase. Paid subscriptions will be available starting around August 2026.

The SFD Checker for diesel engines tells you the current status regarding the SFD (Selective Catalytic Reduction) of the respective vehicle.
