The error code P0087 applies to vehicles with a common-rail diesel engine (CR-TDI). It indicates that the fuel pressure in the rail (fuel distribution pipe) is below the target value requested by the control unit. This can range from a simple clogged fuel filter to a faulty high-pressure pump.
WAS BEDEUTET P0087?
The engine control unit (ECU) requests a specific fuel rail pressure (250-2000 bar depending on the operating condition), which is monitored by the fuel rail pressure sensor (G247). If the pressure remains below the target value despite maximum activation of the quantity control valve (N290) and the pressure regulation valve (N276), a P0087 fault code is set.
COMMON SYMPTOMS:
- The engine is difficult to start or doesn't start at all (the fuel injection system only activates when a minimum rail pressure is reached).
- Power loss at higher speeds (the target fuel injection amount cannot be achieved with insufficient pressure).
- Engine misfire during acceleration (rail pressure fluctuations/regulation issues).
- The engine stalls while driving (especially on highways).
- Engine check light is on.
MOST COMMON CAUSES:
- Fuel filter clogged (maintenance required).
- Air in the fuel system (not bled after filter replacement).
- Fuel pump in the tank (pre-lift pump) is defective or too weak.
- N290 mass flow control valve defective.
- High-pressure pump (HDP) worn out or defective.
- Pressure regulating valve N276 is defective.
- The G247 rail pressure sensor is providing incorrect readings.
- Injectors leaking (excessive return flow).
DIAGNOSIS WITH VCDS:
- Automatic Scan: P0087 code found in the engine control module (01 - Engine).
- Measured values from engine control unit 8 (01 - Engine): Comparison of target and actual fuel rail pressure at various speeds.
- Check the fuel filter for contamination and either verschandeln it or replace it immediately (same amount of effort).
- Measure the pre-charging pressure (approximately 3.5-5.5 bar, depending on the model; see repair manual).
-
Injector return flow volume test- High-pressure pump: Check the start of delivery and quantity regulation.
REPAIR (from cheapest to most expensive):
- Replace the fuel filter.
- Bleed the system using VCDS or a manual pump, locate and eliminate any leaks (air is entering the fuel system).
- Check/replace the pre-lift pump in the tank.
- Replace the N290 quantity control valve.
- Replace the rail pressure sensor (G247).
- Repair or replace the high-pressure pump.
