Sharan 2.0 P0087 - Low Rail Pressure

Hello, the vehicle I'm having trouble with is a 2013 Sharan 4Motion 2.0 TDI with 140 horsepower, engine code CFFB.

When the engine is cold and for the first 10 kilometers, it runs perfectly. However, once it's properly warmed up, after about 10 kilometers, the limp mode engages as soon as I exceed 3000 RPM. The spiral indicator blinks, the ignition cuts out and then comes back on, and then it runs again for a short period until it exceeds 3000 RPM again.

I have already replaced the following parts:

- Fuel filter
- Rail pressure sensor
- Fuel pressure regulator
- No abnormalities detected during reflux volume measurement.

Initially, replacing the fuel quantity control valve and adjusting it using VCDS brought about an improvement.

The error now occurred very rarely.

This happened six months ago, and now it's starting up again.

I replaced the CR pump as a precaution, and it seems to have reduced the frequency of the limp-home mode.

However, the error is still there...

Can you rule out contaminated fuel? Is there also no leak in the fuel system?

Was the old pump defective? Were there shavings in the system, or was the pump simply replaced?

What pressure is being displayed as fuel pressure?

A potential cause could be a high-resistance connection at the pins of the connector on the high-pressure valve.

Just use KData Scope to create a log and then see if and how much the pressure drops.

I would like to log the target and actual rail pressure values, along with the injection quantity and engine speed, and try to reproduce the error.
I suspect the deviation occurs when a high injection quantity is used at high engine speeds.

Here are some possible causes that come to mind:
- The software in the engine control unit is not original, and an "utopian" target value is being attempted. The same applies to a fake box connected to the rail pressure sensor.
- The pressure relief valve is not closing properly / is stuck.
- The pump is not delivering enough fuel because: it is worn out (unlikely, as it was a new pump?), the diesel filter is clogged, there is an obstruction in the fuel intake in the tank, the fuel hose is leaking and drawing in air.

While on vacation, someone poured sugar into the gas tank of the Vito, which had some interesting effects. There were occasional, significant drops in power, the engine sometimes stalled completely, and then the car would start running again...

Possibly check the pressure of the KST support unit.

Check the fuel injection quantity deviation of the injectors. A value above 1 may indicate a faulty injector (only consider the positive (+) range, do not include negative values).
Possibly the new/used HD pump is defective.

I immediately found an operating point at approximately 4000 rpm where the desired pressure and the actual pressure closely matched when using the full injection amount.

This implies that the pump cannot be subject to mechanical wear.

Possible causes include a stuck pressure regulating valve or problems with fuel intake, such as those caused by dirt, foreign objects, or leaky hoses.

Is the fuel tank vent working? If the pressure difference can be induced, try a test drive with the fuel cap only very loosely tightened.

Yes, I assume the pump fits, because there's no reason why the old one and the new one would produce the same error message.

The fuel vent is working correctly, I haven't experienced any issues, and there are no changes.
On Saturday, I drove 50km with a trailer, and the misfires were noticeable much earlier.

The next day, the engine worked very well when it was cold, but it started having problems again once it got hot. I've attached another log file.

Is there a measured value used to control the pressure regulating valve?
If so, I would log the following: pressure (target and actual), control signals, and fuel temperature.

The way the control system behaves when the engine is "hot" versus "cold" can provide clues as to where there are issues with the pressure regulation.

Auxiliary fuel pump.

I have been following the issue with the rail pressure on the Sharan with the CFFB engine code, as I am currently experiencing the exact same problem with a vehicle.
Sharan 2012 4Motion, 2.0 TDI with 140 hp, engine code CFFB, mileage 121,000 km.
"In my case, the error is reproducible when I drive at low RPMs and gently accelerate."
That means the engine speed is around 1200-1500 RPM, and I don't even have to fully accelerate for the glow plug warning light to come on in the instrument cluster, and then the car goes into limp mode.
Once you replace the ignition coil, everything goes back to normal.

So far, I have checked and replaced quite a few things, just like you have.

Pre-charge pressure checked -- Target value: 4.5 bar - value was correct.
I have renewed.
Fuel filters.
Rail pressure sensor.
Control valve on the rail.
Metering valve on the high-pressure pump.
2 injectors replaced.
and the other two injectors were swapped again, this time in a different orientation.

Since there hasn't been any lasting improvement, I wanted to ask if and how you were able to resolve the issues?

What I find implausible is that the error occurs even with very slight acceleration, which, from the perspective of fuel consumption, shouldn't require much fuel.
Because if I avoid driving in that RPM range and drive a bit faster, the car runs without any problems.
Therefore, in the low-pressure fuel supply section, I did not perform any further quantity checks after verifying the pre-supply pressure.
The VW ODIS program I use for diagnostics suggests this fuel rail pressure and quantity test three times in the case of a fuel rail pressure error.
First, directly after the high-pressure pump's fuel inlet, then before the fuel filter, and finally directly at the fuel tank's front unit.
The pre-pressure should be 4.5 bar, and 1.0 liter of fuel should end up in the measuring cup within 30 seconds.

So, good advice is expensive right now, and I really don't want to buy any more unnecessary and expensive spare parts.
