... and an oil filling for PDs is also a cost factor, considering which I critically assess the expected benefit.

Hm echt, bei unserem Würzburger Öllieferanten kostet 1 Liter Castrol SLX II 50601 Öl 5.99€ (mit MwSt. 6.94€). Das fiAre you expensive?

Their 'Haus-und-Hof-Öl' (heating oil for homes and gardens) costs only €4.99 per liter plus VAT.

So, you can't argue with the cost factor. icon_wink.gif

Hi Julian,

If I factor in the cost of the trip from the Saarland to your supplier, it will be really expensive again icon_razz.gif.
Or I need to look more closely for similarly inexpensive sources... can you give me some tips (e.g., retail chains)?

Hi!

Hehe, that will be more expensive, that's clear, but icon_wink.gif Wü is not very cheap when it comes to oil derivatives anyway...

You probably know Delticom, but I would simply inquire with your local oil wholesaler (Gelbeseiten.de), which is what I did here. icon_biggrin.gif And they don't even have minimum purchase requirements for me, so Delticom can just forget about it.
Just ask at your favorite gas station who supplies them; you'll usually find out the source, and it probably won't be too far away.

Good luck!

by the way
Changing the oil (and filter) more frequently is always better.

Hello Ulf,
You could actually switch to regular synthetic oil during your first oil change (after about 1000 km). You'll pay around €20 for 5 liters. And with your low mileage, the short oil change interval won't be a problem.

Many people are actually critical of this long-life oil!
How is it here in this forum?

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

'MFG' is an abbreviation for 'mit freundlichen Grüßen,' which means 'best regards' or 'sincerely.' It is commonly used in German-language emails and letters.

Hi,

Sure, with the first oil change, I definitely want to switch to fixed intervals and use less highly refined oil.

Hmm, 4 euros per liter for synthetic motor oil... can you name a widely available brand or source for that?

Sorry,
You are right. PDs without the LongLife specification require 50501, not 50500 as I thought.
Therefore, 4 liters for 26€ at the engine oil shop is quite a good price. But let's not argue about 10€ here icon_wink.gif.

Best regards.
P.S. I read about the Passat PD with 370,000 km on motor-talk.de. Unfortunately, I can't say where exactly on the website I found that information.

MFG

I would do it exactly as you suggested. I'm not a fan of the 'LongLife' oil change interval. First, there's the price of the oil, and second, the condition of the oil during the LongLife phase (i.e., after more than 15,000 km). Yesterday, I checked the oil level in our Golf IV 1.6 16V at the shop. The oil smells terrible. Also, there was a slimy substance on the oil filler cap.

Best regards, WarLord.

Here are a few general thoughts on the meaning of something:

What are the common causes of failure in TDI engines? The first thing that comes to mind is:

- Timing belt tensioner
- Worn fuel injectors.
- Fuel injection pump broken.
- Cylinder head gasket
- ...

There's nothing in that that would be related to wear and tear caused by oil changes not being performed optimally.

If a (in my opinion unnecessary) oil change is absolutely required, then do it later, around 10,000 km. It's not worth it before that. You'll see for yourself. In my case, the oil didn't look particularly "dirty" at 2000 km (ASZ).

Hello everyone!

I don't believe that oil changes were previously required every 1000 or 1500 km to prematurely remove wear from new engines, but rather I suspect that the primary purpose was to remove manufacturing residues from the engine.
Nowadays, the cleaning processes for components are much more sophisticated and effective than they used to be. In particular, process reliability has improved significantly. Where previously a worker would clean the parts with compressed air, there is now likely to be an ultrasonic bath that cleans all parts equally well. I believe that this is why the oil changes could be extended to 1500 km.

Despite this, I also had an oil and filter change done on my car after approximately 3500 km, just to ease my mind. I still firmly believe that the amount of particles resulting from manufacturing residues outweighs the amount of wear particles within the first 15,000 km.
Therefore, I would change the oil of a broken-in engine after it has already been driven for a few kilometers under full load and has been thoroughly flushed. My recommendation: between 3000 and 5000 kilometers.

Regards,
Alex.
