Hello,

I don't want to start another discussion here about the usefulness of the (already discontinued by manufacturers for some time) oil change after the initial break-in period, at around 1500 km.

But for those who still want to do it, wouldn't a simple filter change almost achieve the same effect as an oil and filter change?

The wear particles (that accumulate in the filter) are removed from the engine, but the remaining oil is not yet old enough or has not been used enough to require a change -> so it remains in the engine, because it has been cleaned of wear particles thanks to the discarded filter.

Or does the pore size of a standard filter still allow so much fine "abrasive paste" to pass through (and thus circulate within the engine) that "break-in oil change" enthusiasts want to remove even the finest wear particles from the engine -> hence a complete oil change?

(Yes, I admit it: my ordered Polo has something to do with the question... icon_wink.gif)
Gruß Ulf

Hello Ulf!
"If we're going to do something, let's do it right," that's my opinion. Just changing the filter wouldn't really achieve anything, would it? I think the particles that the filter has "collected" won't be released that easily. Therefore, it can stay there. And it won't get so clogged that the bypass valve activates...

bye
Dirk.

Hi Dirk,

Basically, I agree with you.

However, a filter that is "partially clogged" due to wear has a higher flow resistance than a new one, meaning it "destroys oil pressure."
Therefore, simply changing the filter will result in a higher oil pressure (although I don't know exactly how much higher icon_redface.gif).

I might try it that way sometime.
I still have a few months to think about it... and the cost of oil filling for PDs is also a factor, considering that I'm skeptical about the potential benefits.

Hi ulf.

What kind of hellish machine did you order?

I'll take a look at the 130 horsepower TDI - then I'll come by after it's delivered icon_smile.gif.

Did you order from Grossklos, or are there other retailers in Saarland icon_smile.gif?

Greetings.

Hi Martin,

"of course" the 130 hp in the base model icon_wink.gif.

There are other dealers, but Grosklos offered me the best deal, including the option to trade in my Golf.

@dieselmartin

'Well, what do you know! Of course, Ulf ordered himself one of those little 'poison dwarves'.'

Okay, getting back to the topic, if I were to do it, I would definitely change the filter and oil at the same time. Just to be able to sleep better at night. The risk of catching some dirt particles while draining the oil, which could then end up in the engine, is too high for me.

I wish you good luck.

My trekking equipment was also quite cheap at Grossklos, but in hindsight, I would never go there again.
Overall, the service was terrible... no, it was simply non-existent... They didn't keep to a single agreement or promise!
But whatever, the warranty is over, and they'll never see me again.

Wow, they actually offer the base model with 130 horsepower.

Here's a translation of the text from German to English, preserving all the icon_confused.gif markers:

"How is anyone supposed to understand Volkswagen's policies when the 150 HP TDI G4 icon_sad.gif was only available as a GTI or Highline. Here, the 130 HP engine was the largest. And the ARL engine isn't even available } in the Variant model."

Hi Ulf,

I completely understand your explanation and I think it's definitely a worthwhile endeavor.
I performed the first oil change on my Golf at 10,000 km. This was because I urgently needed oil in France (yes, I should have brought some with me). Before the oil change, I had to add about one liter. Since the oil change, and now at 20,000 km, I have added a total of 200 ml. Of course, I also changed the filter at the time.

Even though I'm not sure, and the impression is probably subjective, I had the feeling that the original oil fill was somehow quite low... how else can you explain such a sudden drop in measurable oil consumption?

Matthias.

Hello Ulf,
What do you hope to achieve with the oil change?
Is it because the motor benefits from a longer lifespan?
You drove your Golf for 6.5 years and 50,000 km, and now you're worried about such insignificant things?
I think this change is absolutely unnecessary and only costs unnecessary money. I would rather go to an Italian restaurant icon_biggrin.gif.

In my opinion, the topic of oil changes is often overrated!

Best regards,
Sausage blinkers.

Hi,

If it "works", it will result in less abrasive grinding paste being released from the engine during the initial break-in period, which means less wear and tear until the first regular oil change.

It's not currently planned that I will give up the Polo "so soon" again... and with the Golf, this development was also not foreseeable at the time.

Counter-question: Why did manufacturers used to recommend an oil change after approximately 1000 km, and why has this "suddenly" disappeared?

Hi.
I suspect it's because the manufacturing process has improved.
At least, that's how I understood it in the lecture (MB)!
I actually think it's a good thing that this unnecessary change is no longer mandatory. After all, it would have brought a few more customers to the workshops!

'Other high-mileage drivers also don't do that, and their PDs run without problems for 370,000 km in 3 years.' (This is what someone wrote in another forum.)

And just as carefully as you treat your car (e.g., not letting it idle above 1895 RPM), it would probably last forever. icon_wink.gif

Hi, where was that? In another thread, someone strongly claimed that all SSDs tend to develop stuttering issues over time. I'd like to look into that.

Hi,

and here we go again, into the discussion icon_confused.gif, but okay:

In my opinion, "better manufacturing" doesn't mean that the wear and tear that used to necessitate an initial oil change no longer occurs; it's probably just less than it used to be.

Nowadays, a new engine is often designed to produce less wear in the oil than in the past. However, this means that some abrasive particles can circulate within the engine until the first scheduled oil change, as they are not captured by the filter. In the past, a larger proportion of the (larger) amount of wear particles would be expelled from the engine after approximately 1000 km.

So, is the current solution really better than the previous method?
Unless today's filters are so much finer that what they let through as initial wear particles is truly insignificant for the engine. icon_rolleyes.gif icon_question.gif

Hi,
While it's somewhat of a debate about irrelevancies when we don't even have the tolerance values that were valid then and are valid today, it's conceivable that an engine back then, after 1000 km, could have reached the performance level of a new engine today. In that case, essentially everything would be the same.

Why would someone only change the filter or only the oil? Is that supposed to be done every 1500 km?
Perhaps not entirely important yet, but when comparing costs, car ownership costs are a factor.
a proper oil change... icon_rolleyes.gif
"Spit it out, I always change my oil noticeably before the latest possible date."
km stood. It wouldn't be worth it to me, even for just a few euros.

Of course, today's engines benefit from tighter manufacturing tolerances than in the past. This is largely due to better tools (CNC machines, etc.). However, the concept of tolerance still exists, and wherever metal moves, there's always a bit too much friction initially. Consider the worst-case scenario: the outer part of a bearing is at the upper limit of its tolerance, and the inner part is at the lower limit. If this happens in three places, and the tools used are only as accurate as their maintenance (e.g., delayed replacement of cutting heads), it can lead to slightly more wear during the initial running-in period of a new engine. However, this isn't necessarily a major issue if it doesn't happen everywhere.

As I mentioned in my previous post, my car (not just my TDI, but others as well) consumed significantly more oil in the first few kilometers than it does now. Whether this can be attributed to manufacturing tolerances is not certain, but it might be something to consider.

Even electric motors (small, medium, and large) are not immediately operated at full load after production, as all components need to be properly broken in. And, as is well known, an electric motor has fewer moving parts than a reciprocating combustion engine.
