Hello,

I have a question about a non-diesel engine.

It's my 15-year-old Volkswagen Golf I Cabriolet with 172,000 kilometers (approximately 107,000 miles) on the odometer.

Recently, I heard some noises, and after a quick inspection, it was clear that they were coming from the power steering pump, which was completely empty of oil.

After refilling the oil, the noise was gone. icon_smile.gif

Unfortunately, I found the oil on the power steering unit again.
The rubber seal had two small cracks from which oil was leaking.
While removing the cuff, I encountered a significant amount of oil, approximately 0.2 liters.

Upon inquiry with VW, it was stated that the servo unit was defective icon_cry.gif.

'This is not repairable and needs to be completely replaced; the material cost alone is 530 euros.'

Does anyone have any experience with this?
Is it okay to have oil inside the cuff?
Can a new one be installed, or will it break again after a short time?
Can the servo gear be repaired?
Are there no individual parts available for the gearbox from VW, or somewhere else?

Maybe someone here has an idea.

Best regards,

Faxes.

Hello, I assume that the steering gear can be repaired.
It was built, after all.
Check the manufacturer on the steering system (e.g., ZF or something like that).
You can also get gaskets there.

It depends heavily on the transmission.

For some items, there are repair kits available, but for most, there aren't.
most of the time, the piston rod is full of scratches due to dirt (especially if the bellows have been defective for a longer period of time, which I have personally experienced icon_confused.gif). Then, new seals obviously won't fix anything either...

Have you checked the scrap heap?

Hello Gremlin, you're right. If the seals have been leaking for a long time, rust and dirt will certainly do their part.
Faxe really should go to Schrotti's.

Hello Faxe!

I also once had a leaky boot on the steering gear of my Golf II '88. I then replaced it with a new one and continued to drive it for several more years.

Okay, but if the oil from the expansion tank gets pumped into the bellows, then new bellows wouldn't make any difference icon_wink.gif.
