There are likely some lambda sensors (oxygen sensors) that can measure temperature (06a906461 a, b, or c - I don't know the exact letter). However, they are not used in diesel engines, but rather in 1.8 turbo engines.
I don't know why he ultimately needs the signal, because it worked just as well with the mass airflow sensor without the trailing letters (the one from the diesel engine).

This is simply the standard LMM (lambda measuring device) for gasoline engines. Naturally aspirated, non-turbo engines then require a temperature sensor for the 'charge' air icon_wink.gif.

TDI engines only have a turbocharger air pressure sensor, which is used as a trigger for the glow plug heating system during engine start.

I can't quite understand this erratic clicking sound. The only possibility would be a completely faulty alternator or a problem in that area, causing the EDC (Electronic Drive Control) to start saving energy based on the load (DFM signal). If the alternator is then completely malfunctioning, the EDC will simply follow along.
You might want to look into that area sometime.

The afterglow feature has been disabled; it will no longer function above 2500 rpm.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

Can the audible clicking of a relay confirm its functionality (in a Golf IV ALH)?
It occurs when it's cold and only with a cold engine, and the shift point is somewhere between 2000 and 2500 RPM. The clicking sound is audible and happens when the engine speed is increasing and decreasing.
Sometimes, when shifting gears, you can observe a brief flicker of the headlight, which indicates that a significant amount of power is being used during the process.

I think it's the glow plug heater, as previously suspected. However, it's not making a clicking sound.

In my opinion, the noise has gotten louder with age (or maybe my hearing has improved). Can anyone else confirm this?

@Holger:

Glow plug heating =/ Glow plugs (afterglow).

You definitely won't hear the clicking sound of the glow plug relay for the G4ALH engine. What you're hearing is the relay for the afterglow of the glow plugs on the engine.

Glow plug heating is independent of speed.

@dieselmartin:
It's okay. It only bothers me when people start talking without knowing or having read about the problem.

'Back then, I spent almost a month troubleshooting the glow plug heater in my G4 ALH engine because it wasn't working for reasons I couldn't figure out, and I couldn't find the problem. According to Elsa (a diagnostic system), the mass airflow sensor (MAF) is used as a condition for the heater to activate, while the main coolant temperature sensor (G72? G62? I don't remember exactly, it's been a long time) is used as a condition for it to shut off.'

Okay, now we've filled this thread with contradictions icon_confused.gif.

icon_arrow.gif Julian says that, according to ELSA, the LMM can measure temperature.

icon_arrow.gif Gremlin says that it's not like that, and that the TDI only has the charge air temperature sensor.

icon_question.gif How is it really ????

(I'm just humbly sharing Gremlin's opinion.)
(By the way, the GSK heating system is NOT completely speed-independent - it shuts off at very low speeds (just before stalling) - I'm happy to find the source for that.)

As Mersenne already said:

There are TWO lambda sensors (oxygen sensors). One has a temperature sensor for gasoline engines, and the other does not have a temperature sensor and is used for diesel engines.

I now only partially believe the parts catalog. Experience is the best teacher. icon_wink.gif

You can easily check this yourself: remove the mass airflow sensor (MAF) and look at it from the back. There's a space there where the temperature sensor is supposed to be (it looks like a resistor).
The current HFM5 unit is also missing the corresponding pin in the connector.

Thank you for the feedback.
I'm going to start by checking the voltage regulator of the alternator. This should hopefully fix the flickering headlights that I've been experiencing. Maybe it will also resolve the clicking sound from the glow plug relay. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thomas.
