Hello everyone,
What do you think about collecting some engine bay photos of various TDIs, marking the most important components with arrows, and then incorporating them here in a suitable place?
Because the question of where the AGR (exhaust gas recirculation valve) is, where the MAF sensor (mass airflow sensor) is, etc., keeps coming up, and such pictures would certainly help to clarify things.
It doesn't really have to be every single car; overall, they are quite similar, and especially the parts look alike.
What do you think?
I could contribute a picture of Ibiza / ASV.
Best regards,
Jan, who also asked eight months ago where the EGR valve is located. 1Z5 CFHF / AHB H4D

Hello Jan!
I would welcome your suggestion.
It would be even better to not only photograph the location where the part is installed, but also the part itself (e.g., MAF sensor - helpful for cleaning procedures, etc.).
Best regards, D.

Hi Jan,
A comprehensive photo collection would likely require a significant amount of server space (but you probably know that better than I do), and furthermore – this is my concern – it could potentially lower the overall quality of the forum, possibly leading to a flood of related questions like, "I can't find the charging socket; it's not visible in the photo. HELP!!!"
I'm sorry if that sounds arrogant, but the "host," Rainer, doesn't want to offer this as a trivial playground for beginners, and I agree with that.
I still think your basic idea is good.
My suggestion for providing guidance would be a list of general descriptions, based on parts that the intended audience can easily find.
Okay, gib mir den deutschen Text, den du übersetzt haben möchtest.
"The mass airflow sensor (MAF) is located between the air filter housing and the intake manifold, where a multi-pin electrical connector connects to the intake pipe."
Sure, I can do that. Please provide the text you would like me to translate from German to English. I will also include any crafting tips or instructions, as suggested by yomam.
With descriptions like these, anyone who hasn't seen a diesel engine for the first time should be able to understand - and it saves storage space .
A corresponding short description for each TDI-specific component, and that's all it takes to create a (largely) type-independent universal guide through the engine compartment. Gruß Ulf

Hi Ulf,
Don't worry, that doesn't sound arrogant. You're naturally right that not everything can be seen in such pictures, and that naturally leads to questions, especially since individual model years can differ.
That transformation of the idea is a good solution, and it could certainly be enhanced with pictures of the relevant parts – that would help anyone find their way around any engine compartment.
Regarding the space for such images, they aren't that large if you don't exaggerate the resolution, but I'm not entirely sure how much spare capacity Rainer has. However, I would definitely be willing to provide space (ad-free, with a fast connection) for such images, as images are static content that can be easily linked, even if they are located elsewhere.
Best regards,

Hello Jan,
Basically, I think your idea is good too; it would be a great way to highlight the differences between various vehicles.
To be honest, I'm also worried about being overwhelmed with a flood of questions/emails, like "My solenoid valve for charge pressure regulation is green, but I can't find it in the picture..." (because it's black there), etc.
The sheer volume of emails (yes, to webmaster_at_dieselschrauber.de) regarding the 10-cent tuning has been a bit stressful and has clogged up my personal inbox.
Things like "where is my fuel injection pump?" really came up.
Initially, the somewhat biting additions at the beginning of the article were able to stem the tide.
I believe the best way to find and understand specific components is to first grasp the function of the entire system, for example, by studying self-study materials, literature, or technical articles like those from the AGR (presumably a specific organization or publication).
Then, the individual components can usually be easily identified by their location, wiring, or hose connections.
Sure, everyone starts from scratch at some point. Images might be a helpful supplement in the learning process, but it's better to learn by understanding the function and by taking things apart (where possible).
I would prefer to expand the area of the technical articles. I think it's a good idea to include pictures of the respective parts in the technical articles, but people should find them themselves in the engine compartment.
Best regards, Rainer.

Hi everyone,
therefore, the homeowner's opinion is clearly
So, the question remains: who wrote it?
My suggestion: the initiator of the core idea = Jan - analogous to everyday working life --> "Good idea, go ahead and do it!" Gruß Ulf

Hi,
I don't know if I would be able to do that technically well enough (I haven't been doing it for very long yet), but of course, one can try and then discuss such things. I'll take a look, but it might take a while, because time is a scarce resource .
I think that the whole thing probably won't come about all at once, but rather gradually, and certainly with the involvement of different authors.
If we're being precise, there's already a beginning with the articles on the AGR (Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor) and the glow plug preheating system. To continue in that format would essentially be the way to go, wouldn't it?

Hi Jan,
The format of the technical articles for each TDI-specific section seems rather excessive to me.
AGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and glow plug heating are small subsystems about which one could write a lot.
LMM, various magnetic valves, NBF, temperature and pressure sensors... what more can be said about their function - especially for non--beginners!?
Okay, here's the translation:
"I'd like a brief description, consisting of 1-2 sentences for identification, one sentence describing its function, and a short note about possible DIY maintenance tasks (e.g., cleaning the LMM, performing a knock test for the NBF, etc.). Ideally, include a link to the relevant article for more information." Gruß Ulf

Hi Ulf,
"By 'in der Art,' I meant less the quantity and more the way it fits into the overall concept of the website. Of course, you can't write the same amount about everything; sometimes, just a few sentences are enough."
For the selection process, we could also limit ourselves to things that are typical for TDI engines, meaning we should exclude anything that falls under general automotive technology (like starters, alternators, etc.).
Maybe I'll start working on the LLK (likely referring to a specific project or task) next week, and I'll take a proper photo of my scrap parts, as I think it's quite useful for diagnostics in this context. I'm planning to "dig them out" anyway, to provide Rainer with the promised number of the blind plug.
A diagram, similar to the schematic from the industrial motor article, could be placed centrally within the overall presentation, but updated to avoid any (c) issues. This should be sufficient for most people to locate the components, as everyone should be able to see the pressure pipes and "trace" them.
Let's see... I'll continue working on my dissertation for a while. If I don't feel like it anymore, maybe I'll start doing something else.
Best regards,
Jan. 1Z5 CFHF / AHB H4D
