Hello everyone,
My Fabia 74kW TDI-PD engine, with 83,000 km on the clock, makes a clearly audible clicking noise during load changes (when not shifting smoothly or when accelerating/decelerating gently). It sounds like something is "playing" or moving.
Furthermore, the sound doesn't seem entirely healthy when under load – in 5th gear, releasing the accelerator until it starts to push: The noise becomes noticeably deeper and more grating than when driving normally.
How much "play" or noise is considered normal during load changes or thrust operation?

Hmm, it could be the flexible pipe – although its performance has been significantly reduced since the AFN/AHU models.
Behind the turbo, there's a wire mesh that is designed to be flexible yet stable.
Does this work? / Does this have a function?

EDITH:
Fabia = Transverse engine: In that case, it could also be the front hydraulic mount. It makes a "plop" sound when you accelerate quickly if it's broken (this was already known on the Golf 2).

Can you reproduce the noise while stationary with the brakes applied?
If so, then have someone check it out and see where the noise is coming from.

Hi bloeckler,
Do the engine mounts look healthy?

Hello and thank you for the answers.
The engine is an ATD.
I visited my Skoda dealer, and he told me that the axle nuts were undersized from the factory (for vehicles up to the year 2001) and would be replaced with steel ones free of charge. However, the previous owner was clever enough not to maintain the service record, so now I have to pay for it.
Does the explanation seem plausible?
I need to test it again while it's stationary...

Is the noise gone now that you've installed the new axle nuts?

The workshop appointment is not until in 1.5 weeks because everyone is on vacation right now.

And were it the axle nuts now?

Good question. My dealer did get the nuts, but unfortunately, he doesn't have the special tool to change them...
I can hardly believe that the noise is caused by that. I'll try to get the transmission fluid changed soon.
By the way, changing my mass airflow sensor didn't improve anything at all – it still cuts out exactly at 190 km/h on the speedometer. It should be possible to reach 205 km/h on the speedometer since it's registered as having a top speed of 187 km/h.
Does anyone happen to live in the Palatinate region or nearby and have a laptop and the corresponding cable?

Hi,
"Mine is probably doing the same thing, even with only 1000 kilometers on it."
I suspect it's coming from the ZMS (presumably a component in the transmission), as it doesn't seem to be dampened at all: there's also a slight clicking sound when shifting back and forth in 6th gear, and the engine only starts to turn after about 30 cm – just like with a completely worn-out gearbox.
However, through the observation window of the overhead transmission, you can see that something is already rotating next to the gear ring, even while the motor is still stationary. Gruß Ulf

@ ulf
I completely understand your description of the symptoms...
If you happen to inquire at the workshop about it and receive an answer, please let me know the solution .
How was it with your car (specifically, a Volkswagen Golf)?

He hadn't done it (quite) that way, and his engine also rotated much more "precisely" when being pushed back and forth – apparently the AFN has a "stiffer" dual-mass flywheel than the ASZ.
However, the ASZ engine doesn't actually feel "sluggish"... and I can drive it perfectly fine from low RPMs so far, whereas the Golf occasionally jerked.
However, the ASZ engine produces very little torque between approximately 1000 and 1200 rpm. The AFN engine was at least twice as powerful in that range. Gruß Ulf
