Hello!

One more question about the Climatronic system.
Does the compressor run when the Climatronic is set to AUTO?
Always wear it (except when it's below 5 degrees Celsius)?
Or only when needed?
And is it generally disabled in the ECON environment?

Best regards, Buggel.

Hey Buggel!

No, the compressor only runs when it's needed, meaning when the refrigerant has warmed up to a point where cooling is required again. This also applies in winter. In winter, people often bring snow into the car, which then melts and evaporates. In this case, the air conditioning is needed to dry the air. In ECON mode, the compressor is switched off, so it never runs. However, if you set your Climatronic to recirculation mode, meaning you close the vents to the outside, the compressor will start again. Otherwise, the moisture inside the vehicle cannot be vented, and the air conditioning runs to dry the air. Otherwise, on a long journey in the rain, you would quickly be unable to see anything through the fogged-up windows icon_wink.gif.

Greetings from Graz, Peter.

Hello,

A sensor is attached to the evaporator. This sensor controls the activation of the compressor. In winter (below approximately 4°C), the compressor will not start, even if recirculation mode, automatic mode, or similar settings are activated.

In the "Auto" mode, the air conditioning system in the Golf IV always runs when the temperature is above 5 degrees Celsius, consuming a minimum of 40% power. The control is managed within the compressor via the stroke of the swashplate.

Interestingly, unlike the Golf, in the current Polo, the compressor runs at 2% power even when the air conditioning is turned off. Therefore, with this model, you no longer need to remember to regularly activate it during the winter months.

A VW developer once posted this on the GF forum.

Hello,

"Then it's quite strange that my Golf IV, engine code AJM, manufactured in May 2001, still has an "old-fashioned" magnetic clutch that only has two states: fully engaged or disengaged. There is definitely no wobble plate compressor installed there."

"My T4 TDI ACV model from 2001 also either turns on or off. In the winter, even at below-freezing temperatures and with a warm interior, the compressor turns on when you press "Automatic" or "Recirculation." You can clearly hear the "click" of the magnetic clutch, and you can also see it in the engine speed, indicating that the air conditioning is running. So, what's going on? My Galaxy TDI AHU behaved the same way. What's the issue with the air conditioning compressor now? I'd like to know, because you never stop learning."

Greetings, Peter.

Hello,
While this topic might be a bit old, but:
I tried to replicate this circuit in my Golf IV. Unfortunately, the connections don't match the Passat. In a thread here, I identified contact T12/3 for the display, and that works, but apparently the compressor is always running, even when hot air is coming out of the nozzles.
Is there a way to tell when the cooling process is actually happening?
Thank you for your tips!
Regards,
Klaus.

Even if you still use the heating in the summer and put it on 'auto' mode...
The air conditioning compressor runs on...

The same in the fall...

It might sound paradoxical, but this is the only way for the system to dehumidify the air. First, it cools down to the outside temperature. The humidity condenses in the evaporator and drains away. Then, the air is reheated, and the relative humidity drops dramatically, resulting in very dry air.
It's best to connect the sensor for the magnetic clutch directly to its control circuit, i.e., tap into it directly at the compressor. The Climatronic controls the clutch via the fan control unit. However, this unit can independently shut off the compressor based on coolant temperature and EDC intervention, without the Climatronic being aware of it.

The only way to definitively determine if the system is cooling is to read the temperature sensor on the evaporator. To do this, put the Climatronic system into service mode using known Climatronic codes and switch to channel 40. With a functioning system, the temperature at the evaporator should quickly drop below 10°C and then stabilize around 4-5°C, regardless of how hot it is outside.

CU Gremlin.

'By the way, during the initial period, I was puzzled as to why the car became unpleasantly cold whenever I turned on the air conditioning compressor. After all, it's supposed to be a Climatronic system, designed to maintain a specific temperature. So, I stuck a few precision temperature sensors onto the ventilation nozzles (foot and middle).'
The surprising result: the blowing and interior temperatures didn't change by even a single degree. The feeling of coldness can only be explained by the evaporation of moisture from the clothes, which creates a cooling effect. This feeling of coldness disappeared after about 10 minutes, but could be reproduced at any time by simply running the system in ECON mode for another 15 minutes.
