Hello,

The rubber seal on the rear right door of my Golf IV is torn.
'Can anyone tell me if any special tools are needed to replace the seal, or what the best way to proceed is?'

Thank you in advance.

Frank.

Which one are you referring to, the one with the continuous roof (3-door or 5-door)?
Okay, I once replaced the inner door seal on a Passat (which doesn't have a roof trim seal). It was relatively straightforward. It did take quite a while, but I didn't feel like I needed any special tools, although I can't rule out that there might be some available.

Hello,

It's a 5-door model. I'm referring to the internal rubber seal.
I noticed that the casting has a metal insert.
Therefore, my question is whether you need any special tools for that, or if it just requires a lot of finger strength.

Best regards,

Frank.

Hello Frank,

I have an Audi, and with it, you just need enough strength in your fingers. A rubber mallet might be helpful for inserting the new seal, as you can gently tap it into place with it.

Thomas.

Hello,

I changed the gasket today. At first, I thought they had sold me the wrong gasket because it was much too long.
I then called my VW dealer. He told me that the seal needs to be inserted in a 'wave-like' manner. The waves can then be easily tapped into place with a rubber mallet. This compresses the seal.
Once you know that, the matter is relatively simple.

Best regards,

Frank.
