Replace Ignition Switch: DIY Guide & Tips

I want to replace the ignition switch insert in a Passat 35i from 1993. Unfortunately, the construction around the ignition switch isn't as straightforward as it was in my old Golf 2.
The toothed sleeve, which holds the steering wheel, is very firmly connected to the steering shaft (again through a toothing and presumably pressed in). This sleeve tensions the spring that presses against the bearing of the ignition switch housing. Unfortunately, to be able to replace the ignition switch insert, you have to completely disassemble the entire ignition switch housing in order to loosen the mounting screw (a great design ).

Here's my question for everyone:
Do you need to remove this splined sleeve (requiring a special puller, as usual), or do you need to loosen the steering column in the footwell at the angled joint in order to pull it out completely?

Hello. The casing needs to be removed. Besides a puller, hammer, and chisel, I don't know of any other tricks. Why do you want to replace the electrical component? If you have to push the key very far to the right, you need a new lock cylinder!

It's likely that the ignition switch is broken, which is what happened to me. In my case, the contact that turns on things like the radio no longer works.

That's exactly what it looks like. It's a somewhat annoying problem common to VW vehicles.
The starter motor on the Passat isn't working with the ignition key anymore. I got a puller today for the multi-spline adapter sleeve. So, I'll try again next week...

Are you sure about the electrical component?
If you can turn the key extremely to the right, but the engine doesn't start, it's often because the lock cylinder is worn out, and it's not turning the electrical component far enough.
To replace the cylinder, the sleeve does not need to be removed. (I've also replaced the electrical component unnecessarily before.)
