Hello.
My Golf 4 TDI PD with a 6-speed manual transmission is making a strange howling noise.
If I'm rolling through the countryside in 5th gear without giving it any gas, especially at around 60 km/h .
I immediately went to the friendly VW workshop manager, and after a test drive, he...
A saw-tooth pattern has been detected on the rear tire! A clear diagnosis!!!
I've noticed that when I press the clutch while hearing the squealing noise...
The noise disappears and then reappears immediately when I take my foot off the clutch.
The noise is also faintly audible in the 4th and 6th gears.
Could that probably not be the cause of the saw-tooth pattern?
I would really appreciate help and advice.
Original tires !!! 22,000 km driven !!!

So, as a certified automotive mechanic, you should be able to tell whether the noise is coming from the transmission or from the tires!
I'm ruling out the tires.
Maybe some other damage will creep in, which will make the diagnosis easier for you.
I once had a BMW with faulty bearings in the transmission, and that's what it sounded like.

Please provide the model year, engine code, and transmission code.
Could this be it?
Okay, I'm ready. Please provide the German text you want me to translate. Tschüss

Hello.
First registration: 11/2002.
MKB: ASZ
GKB: ERF
Sounds like it might be due to that?!
Since the new car warranty is about to expire, I would like to get a quick repair done by VW.
achieve. What options do I have in case of a gearbox failure?
Is it possible to get rid of these costs for free in the coming years?
Is a written saw-tooth diagnosis sufficient?

So, go check it out and be thorough. If the noise changes when you press the clutch, it's probably not the tires.
I've found that if you directly tell the guys at VW what you want and politely but firmly point out that their diagnosis is nonsense, they make more of an effort. Otherwise, directly state that you need written confirmation from them regarding a possible transmission problem, for future warranty/goodwill claims, and that you will, of course, also be contacting VW directly about this matter. Then, they will either cooperate, or the issue will escalate to VW.
By the way, I also have the ASZ ERF combination, and I can assure you that there's no whining noise coming from the transmission.
"Have there been any issues related to shifting problems, or is everything working perfectly? Apparently, a different type of oil was used in that transmission to resolve problems, replacing G052171A2 with what was considered a better alternative, G057126A2. However, my transmission already has that oil in it, and it was manufactured in July 2002."

Hello.
I went to the VW workshop again yesterday and spoke with the master mechanic and the workshop manager.
Test drove it. I was able to clearly demonstrate that when you press the clutch...
The noise disappears. The two experts then quickly move on.
The saw blade has lost its teeth!
But no one really knew where the problem might be.
- Riding incorrectly (You shouldn't be in the 5th gear if you're going below 60 km/h).
- Normal sounds (hypersensitivity)
- Vibrations in the gear linkage.
- Any issues with the transmission?
And so on. I heard some really funny things!
I'm not completely stupid, you know!
It could originate from anywhere. I had the diagnosis put in writing so that I could also...
to still be treated with understanding even after the warranty period has expired.
I once heard something about drive shafts making noises!
Does anyone have any information about this? I think they were probably swapped with someone else. Golf 4 TDI PD 96 KW 6 Gang ASZ ERF

Hi,
How about a wheel bearing?
It might be a bit early considering the mileage, but anything is possible.
A gearbox failure would be far too premature...
I know this problem from personal experience.
The howling noise disappeared as soon as I disengaged the clutch (otherwise, it was audible at a constant speed of 80 km/h).
After replacing the wheel bearing (for a different reason), this noise disappeared.
It's not necessary, but it can be.
'However, we should still investigate the possibility of a transmission problem!'
Don't let my silly suggestion cause you to miss out on your warranty coverage!
