Hello,
According to the workshop, I need a new turbocharger for my Golf IV TDI PD 115 hp, manufactured in 05/00 and with 80,000 km on the clock. The cost, including installation, should be between 1000 and 1100 euros. That's actually too expensive for me.
I once read something about refurbished chargers (meaning chargers that have been repaired and restored).
Has anyone here had experience with this type of turbocharger? Are they good, meaning do I actually save money, or am I just creating more problems/costs for myself?
Thank you in advance for your help.
greetings

I can't really give you specific advice, but here are a few starting points and perspectives to consider:
In principle, there's nothing wrong with used or refurbished items. It all depends on who did the work and how it was done. There are certainly many competent people, but also at least as many unreliable ones. For example, a refurbished loader should also be finely balanced. And very few people can actually do that. Also, the minimum flow rate should be precisely adjusted.
Overall, these are critical points to consider. From this, you can certainly see that a large number of so-called 'repairers' are not technically or professionally capable of performing repairs to such a high standard.
I don't want to do any advertising here; I am neither related nor in-lawed, and I have no financial benefits.

The shop is near me, and even during the darkest days of socialism, it had an absolutely impeccable reputation. Why don't you ask them? I think they will certainly be able to help you competently.
'edit: Why are they trying to give you a new charger? Lately, there have been quite a few reports of faulty chargers that, upon further inspection, turned out to be completely fine... that might also explain the abundance of often nearly-new chargers at egedöns.'

@ Joergs: Thanks for the tip.
My problem is as follows:
After driving on the highway for a while (so far, only on the highway), the engine suddenly switches to emergency mode (limp mode), meaning I can barely maintain my speed, but I have no acceleration. If I then briefly turn off the engine and start it again, it will pull through fully again. This sometimes only lasts for 200 meters, or sometimes for 25 kilometers. It has happened to me at speeds of 120 km/h and also at almost 200 km/h.
My dealer reported an error related to excessive pressure, and they are now certain that the variable vanes in the turbocharger are becoming stiff, which will cause a buildup of excessively high pressure in the short term. This will then trigger the electronics to initiate the emergency program.
'However, I don't have any specific error messages or anything like that, which is why I didn't post about it right away. I thought there was already a lot of information available on this topic. Although, the information I've found doesn't quite match my situation. For example, I don't have a problem with the engine feeling underpowered (when it's running normally), but rather that the emergency program starts.'

Okay, let's just use the search function and type in "stuck VTG" (VTG being a type of train coupling), and you'll probably find everything you need.
By the way, there's also a technical article about it. Gruß Bertil

Thank you for the tip. To come up with that on your own, you'd have to know what VTGs are.
Sure, here's the translation:

... and it wasn't meant to be malicious.
I noticed that you weren't familiar with the term "VTG," which is why I tried to explain it to you. You're welcome . Gruß Bertil

Hi,
Here's a tip from someone with absolutely no experience: the mass airflow sensor (MAF) might be defective. My colleague had the same symptoms and the same error code in the memory, and the VTG (variable turbine geometry) adjustment was loose. LMM replaced and it's working well now.
(Even two blind chickens sometimes find a grain of corn.) Even if they have to search for a long time ).
Regards,

You can see how the "shovels" are moving by looking at my avatar (the image on the left).
"Why don't you ask your VW Fuzzi for detailed measurement logs, or buy an interface and measure it yourself?"
I once found a small connector on the MAF sensor cable that Seat tried to sell me as a defective throttle position sensor (460 EUR, not available as a replacement part). Measuring and cleaning the contacts myself cost me nothing.

Hello,
I once read something about refurbished chargers (meaning chargers that have been repaired and restored).
0w40
You won't get anything else for your €1,000 at VW! Without returning the old part, the cost of such a charger can be up to 2,000€.
And if you're interested in how a charger is repaired, take a look here: www.motair.de
Regards,
Manuel.
