Hello.

I'm considering buying a set of brand new winter tires for my Passat 35i AAZ this winter.

Arktic M 780 185/65 R14 86T Winter tires - retreaded with a Continental tread pattern - including shipping!!!! For €24.99.

Is the quality still as terrible as it used to be, with parts falling apart at high speeds? I drive 150 km on the highway every day at 150 km/h.

What do you think we should buy?

Greetings.
Rey.

Hi!
So, in many of the tests I've read so far, retreaded tires often FAIL the high-speed test. And since you, as you mentioned, drive a lot on the highway, I would strongly advise against using them. It's better to invest a few more euros and reduce the risk...

Best regards,
Dirk.

Hello Rey!
Retreaded tires, whether summer or winter tires, are an absolute safety risk, regardless of the extensive entrance tests performed before the retreading process. I hesitate to say this, but go to the one with the ugly three red letters (Alle Total Unfähig) and let them sell you Barum tires; it doesn't cost much more, and it's not just Contiprofil, but a Conti subsidiary! Or, Sava tires are also suitable for winter use and are probably available at various tire retailer chains like Reifol or similar.

Best regards,

Dominique.

Here's my quick and humble opinion. I would never install retreaded tires on a car that has performance comparable to a VW Beetle or similar. Especially not if I drove on the highway daily. Of course, I would never drive at 150 km/h with such tires.
To be honest, anyone who drives on the Autobahn so much and so fast should be the last to skimp on tires, because not only does it affect your own safety, but also the safety of other people nearby. Personally, I don't buy the most expensive winter tires either, because I was once disappointed with a supposedly top-rated tire. My current tires, I'd have to check the brand, have surprisingly good traction on snow. However, what's very annoying about them is their poor performance on wet roads. And therefore, unfortunately, they won't make it through the next season.

Mann müsste die Dinger vorm Kauf alle mal probefahren dürfen. Das is.

Thank you for your experiences; I definitely won't buy any reconditioned ones, but I will buy round icon_biggrin.gif.

Hi there,

I can only confirm these experiences. Once and never again. I had a set of "new" tires, supposedly refurbished, installed on my old VW camper van and drove to Spain with it. The first one failed suddenly at 110 km/h on the highway near Seville. It wasn't pleasant with a fully loaded van. During the vacation, two more failed, but we had already noticed that the rubber was starting to detach. We then had to buy two new tires in France, which completely wiped out any savings we had.
I've found that Barum tires wear out very quickly. I had 2 new Barum summer tires, so ultimately, it didn't result in any savings.

Greetings.

"Once, when I bought a car, I got some retreaded winter tires included, and I wanted to "use them up" because my wallet was empty at the time. While driving at 160 km/h on the highway, I noticed strange vibrations. Reducing the speed to 100 km/h only provided temporary relief. I then drove very slowly to the tire dealer near the exit. The diagnosis: the tire casing was broken, and the tire was only held together by the rubber. And it was the front left tire. After that, I had them disposed of and replaced with proper tires."
Therefore, those were also the last retreaded tires I ever bought.

I switched from retreaded tires to genuine winter tires in the middle of winter.
Dealer: 'You're crazy, they're practically brand new.'

'But wooden tires with carved car profiles definitely have more grip than that cheap, retreaded garbage, especially in wet conditions.'

-> security risk!

Tires are and remain the most important component of a car!
A new tire is cheaper than a new bumper.

'Pay attention to the brake tests in the 'Auto-Blöd' magazine. They always get worked up about the extra 10 meters, but they completely forget (or do it intentionally?) that the 'bad' car has different tires than the other 3 cars, which all have the same tires.'
In the age of ABS, the braking distance has little to do with the braking system itself.

Hey guys,

I would like to make a statement on this matter.

A few years ago, I bought a 324td with tires that were supposedly new. After about 200 kilometers on the highway, the steering wheel started vibrating as if I had lost my centering weight. The next chance I got, I checked my tires and discovered that a bubble had formed on the front left tire...

The tire technician thought I was lucky to have gotten away with it so easily.

The moral of the story: To have or not to have (pigs)...

My advice --> stay away!

Regards,
essay

Hello,

bei deinem Fahrprofil würde ich mir sehr gute Winterreifen kaufen. Jeden Tag 150km lang über scheiß Reifen ärgern. Neee.
A friend once had brand new Avon winter tires on an SLK. The car was simply undrivable (even at 140 km/h). My good winter tires (which were Goodyear UltraGrip in this case, and installed a week later) were a completely different story.

Conclusion: Cheap tires are almost never worth the money.

Best regards,
Christian.

My friend had a retreaded front tire fail on the highway. The tread separated. Luckily, nothing serious happened, except that he needed a new fender and a new wheel arch liner. He never drove very fast on the highway, always a maximum of 150 km/h. And he doesn't drive on the highway very often overall.

Since that experience, he no longer drives those things icon_wink.gif.

"Don't even think about buying tires that have been retreaded!!! They should be BANNED! My mother's Fiat Cinquecento already had retreaded tires when she bought it used. I drove that car for 150 kilometers on the highway from Frankfurt to Kassel. Suddenly, the steering wheel and the car body started vibrating so violently that I was SHOCKED and I held the steering wheel rigidly, and everything in the storage compartments flew out..."
I didn't dare to use the brakes, I just let the car roll and then braked at about 50 km/h, and you see, the right front tire had completely disintegrated! I put on the spare tire and continued. After about 90 km, at 110 km/h, the same thing happened again! This time, it was the rear left tire! There was still air in it, so I removed the rest of the tread and continued at 80 km/h for another 220 km! So, don't put your life at risk! icon_rolleyes.gif

Hello fellow DIY enthusiasts.

I had retreaded winter tires on both my old Golf II (1.8i) and Passat 35i (2.0 16V), and I can't report any negative driving characteristics. They also already had "the new honeycomb tread pattern," which wasn't even available on expensive brand-name tires yet. By accident, I also once exceeded the permissible maximum speed of the tires by 30 km/h (160->190), and nothing happened. Of course, it's possible that I just got lucky... icon_eek.gif
In the summer, I avoid using them, as the re-treaded tires tend to wear out quickly, especially with more stress and faster driving - which ultimately ends up costing you more. In the winter, I don't mind as much, because I'm generally more careful with the accelerator pedal anyway.
It's a bit of a gamble, really, because you never know what condition the road surface is underneath the tire. That's why, with my current 1998 AFN Passat, I don't use retreaded tires even in the winter – it just makes me feel better somehow.

Best regards!!
