Hello.

Does anyone know how the steering system is constructed in my vehicle?

Background: Two weeks ago, I replaced the clutch and had to remove the tie rods from the steering rack. On this vehicle, both tie rods connect to a U-shaped piece that is then screwed onto the right end of the steering rack, and it was this connection that I loosened. I also moved the steering and the wheels to remove the gearbox.
After the action, the steering wheel was misaligned, and the alignment test showed a 26mm misalignment.

Could it be that the repeated turning of the steering wheel has caused the steering rack to rotate a few times, and therefore shift in one direction? Or is that not possible? I seem to remember that the steering rack where the tie rod ends are attached was twisted.

"The inner tie rod ends? In any case, the rack and pinion gear cannot twist. Wouldn't it have been simpler to loosen the cone on the hub and pivot the entire assembly?"

Best regards, Robert.

Inside, there are no actual tie rod ends. The tie rods only have a hole with a rubber bushing, through which they are screwed to the U-shaped part mentioned above. Nothing can twist or rotate there.

Are you sure about that? I think something might be wrong.

No, because that U-shaped part and the tie rods were in the way.
Note: The engine and transmission are mounted longitudinally.

Hello.
I'm not as familiar with single-sided gears anymore, but could it be that there are 2 holes in the carrier and 3 in the toothed rack? That would most likely explain the misalignment. And the toothed rack can't be twisted, otherwise the worm gear would have to compensate, which would be an undesirable situation!

Best regards, Robert.

I've also considered that, but the toothed rod and the support close flushly. I don't think that's the case.

I have no idea what happened there }.

To get back to my question: How is the steering system constructed?
Does the toothed rack have teeth on the top side and is it driven by a gear? However, the steering linkage enters the steering gear centrally, so that can't be the case.
How does the re-enactment work?
