I just read micha_passat's answer, and his recommendation.
'Etzold - This is how it's done.' http://www.buecher.de/verteiler.asp?Publica_ID=KNO-18301748541153197722&Artikelnummer=000000552426&rub=buch&site=artikel.asp
After that, I did some searching and found 2 (or 3) more.
'Korp, Dieter - Now I'll help myself' http://www.buecher.de/verteiler.asp?Publica_ID=KNO-18301748541153197722&Artikelnummer=000000552425&rub=buch&site=artikel.asp or the newer...

'Bucheli-VW Passat 1.9 Diesel / 1.6 Turbodiesel (from 1988)' http://www.buecher.de/verteiler.asp?Publica_ID=KNO-18301748541153197722&Artikelnummer=000000552433&rub=buch&site=artikel.asp

It is clear to me that I need a book, but which one do you recommend[/img]?

Okay, I chose the second one from your selection. I'm actually quite satisfied with it, because it's already saved me a lot of money for the workshop! (Recent major repairs: water pump replacement, replacement of the inner joint of the right driveshaft, etc.). It's generally very well described and illustrated. However, I think the descriptions of symptoms and troubleshooting are too brief. While they are present in some chapters, they are only very superficial! The chapter on electrical systems definitely lacks detail. There are a few diagrams, but they are so small that you can't see much, and you have to flip through a lot and search because you get a general overview and then only differences for the individual models.
I just ordered the book that micha_passat recommended. Let's see what's written in it! icon_rolleyes.gif

Okay, I also have the second one. I used to have an A-Corsa back then. I also had a book about it, which was okay, but it didn't have much technical information.
'But in my opinion, it's not that great for a Passat TDI. It leaves quite a few things out. Some things are described in excessive detail (usually things you can do without a manual, like the exhaust), while others are really lacking in information.'
Unfortunately, I don't have anything to compare it to.

I got the 'Etzold' part from the Ford Sierra. I think that describes it better, but I don't own the car myself, so I don't know what it actually looks like in reality.

Best regards.
David.

Hello,

You can also find some helpful books on the literature page, including books that explain the systems.

Hi,

I have both the one from Etzold and the one from Korp.
The Korp book is somehow more interesting.
For this reason, the Etzold book often contains more information due to its more detailed explanations and the use of drawings instead of photographs.
IMO.

Hello Papatom.
Currently, I only have the one from Etzold, which is for the Passat.
I bought one from Korp back in 1986 (or thereabouts) for my Herbie (the 1303 mentioned below).
You can also work with that, but I can't tell you whether that's applicable to the Passat.
'In my opinion, etzold provides better exploded diagrams that improve clarity.'
Korp had (or used to have?) many pictures, but he said back then that the really interesting things should be done in a workshop. icon_exclaim.gif
Best regards.
Micha.

PS: If you need excerpts for proofreading, I have a fax and scanner icon_smile.gif.
PPS: I only know the repair manual for the Beetle.
It was very good too.
