Hello!

Volkswagen Golf III, manufactured in 1997, first registered in 1998, engine code AFN, 135,000 km.

The ABS light is no longer turning off. The error memory indicates:

00283 - Front Left ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G47)
35-00 - -

The error database offers the following options:

- Front left speed sensor (G47) or front left speed sensor - G47 - Open circuit/short circuit to positive.
- Rotor is dirty or damaged.
- Excessive bearing clearance.
- Speed sensor G47 not installed correctly.
- Faulty crankshaft speed sensor (G47).

If it's the G47:
Can anyone give me an approximate estimate of the parts and installation costs?

Greetings,
Klaus.

Parts costs: The VW dealer icon_eek.gif
Installation costs: You can easily install it yourself. Remove the wheel, unscrew the old one, install the new one, and put the wheel back on. That's it. If you don't feel like doing it yourself, your dealer can certainly give you a price for the installation.

Regards,
Guste.

The difficulties associated with the transition were discussed.
mainly me too.
Thank you.

Hello.

I'm experiencing the same problem with the same vehicle and the same sensor (part number: ALE).
First, I cleaned the sensor with compressed air, but it didn't make any difference. After having the error codes read, I was told that the front left sensor was causing the problem.
I'm hesitant to spend the 50€ on a new sensor based on suspicion alone. Especially because I suspect the problem might be a loose connection in the cable.
While driving, the ABS light sometimes turns off and then comes back on again.

My problem is finding the end of the cable that connects to the sensor.
Nach dem Durchbruch im Radkasten scheint es unter dem Batteriehalter weiter zu verlaufen. Is that correct?
Where is the end of the cable? Could the sensor be faulty and then become functional again?

@Clause

The sensor is secured with a screw, and everything can be done yourself. The price is 45€ plus taxes.

Intermittent errors are quite common with ABS sensors. In your situation, I would recommend replacing it first, before you try to troubleshoot the shielded wires that run to the ABS control unit inside the car, as the problem is likely not there in over 90% of cases... But that's your decision.

Guste.

Hello,

For my mother's Golf IV: Materials approximately €80, labor approximately €50.

Best regards,

Hello.

If I had a laptop with a diagnostic connector, I would simply move the sensor from the left side to the right side and then check the error memory! I suppose my only other option is to buy a new one and hope that's the problem.

According to your statement, it might actually work.

Hello!

My ABS light is finally off, and it turned out to be the speed sensor.
So, the costs (part 44.-) were ultimately manageable, thanks to VAG-COM and guste100.

Greetings and thank you.

Clause.

Hi.

'I had the same issue. It was a wheel speed sensor on the front left of my Golf 3, manufactured in 1996. I bought the sensor from Eb[ay], where someone was selling the original ones for 19 euros. I installed it myself, and the error memory seems to clear automatically. The light is off again, and the ABS is working again.'

Golf III und IV haben wohl die gleichen Sensoren. Certainly, at least.

Best regards,
togu

hi,
'In my case, it was the right headlight, and I replaced it, but I'm still having the same problem. How should I proceed with further troubleshooting?'
I drive a Bora TDI with the engine code AJM, manufactured in 2000.
I would be very grateful for the help.
Best regards, Olec.

The first question that arises is: Front or back?

If the correct sensor has been replaced and is not the cause of the problem, the next thing to check is the wiring. This involves a visual inspection of the entire length of the wiring, with a particular focus on the more exposed areas.

If that's not it either, then the only other possibility is the ABS control unit, but I seriously doubt that's the problem.

PS: You have violated rule number 8 of the forum guidelines (see the first post on each page). In this forum, there is no requirement to use lowercase letters!

Okay, I promise to improve, regarding those little faux pas.

So, it was the front right sensor, and the error code G45 was displayed when reading the error memory.

Well, I can't really imagine the ABS control unit just breaking down easily. The cables actually look quite good visually, so I guess I'll have to measure them to see if there's a problem.

Thank you for the response.

Best, Alex.

Is this a permanent error, or a sporadic one?

You'll have a real problem finding Sporadischen.

The ABS sensor is a capacitive sensor that does not have its own intelligence. The evaluation electronics are located in the ABS control unit. This means: Just because the cable has continuity for DC voltage does not mean that the high-frequency signals (with a low voltage amplitude) are transmitted cleanly.

Another consideration regarding the defect is the counterpart to the sensor, the "disc with holes" (or whatever the correct term may be). If there's a hole missing, or if it's blocked, or if the sensor or the disc itself is completely covered in dirt or brake dust, it will produce the same symptom. I actually consider this to be much more likely than invisible cable faults or a defective control unit.

Regards,
Guste.

Hello.

I mentioned my ABS problem above as well.

I have now installed the new sensor into the wheel bearing housing. However, this was done under time pressure and without the necessary lubricant. After a short drive, the ABS warning light also came on.
But now there's a new problem that has only started occurring since the sensor was replaced:
If I exceed the ABS activation speed and brake, the ABS will engage shortly before coming to a complete stop. Regardless of how gently I brake, it always activates, specifically just below 20 km/h. When traveling at higher speeds and braking, the vehicle decelerates normally. Even at high speeds, the ABS activates, but only when it is necessary.
Could it be that the sensor needs to be adjusted more precisely? Because I had to force it into place, and I adjusted the final distance to the wheel bearing carrier by tightening the screw.

Hi,

'Quote:'

Error memory.
'Der schnelle braune Fuchs springt über den faulen Hund.'
1 error saved.

285. Front right speed sensor - G45.
35. SAE error, static.

Therefore, the error should be identifiable, right?
I haven't had a chance to check the cables yet. I think that will be the next step to reach a conclusion. By the way, it can't be due to dirt, since there isn't any left. icon_biggrin.gif
