VALEO 120A Alternator - Replacement & Repair

Hi,
My VALEO 120A alternator in my Passat (90 horsepower, engine AHH) has a burned-out armature winding or a break in the winding.
Now, a new one is needed. I thought it would be better to replace it with a Bosch one right away.
For the model year change from 1998 to 1999, the BOSCH alternator was replaced by a VALEO unit. I assume this was due to cost reasons! ?
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to easily replace a VALEO part with a BOSCH part?

The original VALEO part has the VW part number 028 903 029E. I was offered a used BOSCH part from a Bora manufactured in 2000, with the VW part number 028 903 028E.
The problem is, I would have to have them sent to me without seeing them first, and I'm not sure if they are actually identical!!
Does anyone have any experience with this?

I can't say for sure whether all of them are interchangeable. Perhaps taking a look inside a TDI engine with a Bosch alternator might help. The dealership can certainly assist you if needed.

They advised me to reorder the VALEO part, as it is definitely the correct one.
Why the BOSCH system was replaced with VALEO, and whether anything was changed in the process, they wouldn't or couldn't tell me!
One potential issue is the pulley (with a freewheel). It's not clear whether other manufacturers offer a pulley with the same mounting and whether it would also align correctly.
It seems the only way to do it is to carefully compare the old and the new alternator before replacing it!

Or has VAG reached the point where, like with Opel, you can only choose a V-belt by measuring it with a tape measure held against your arm?

Maybe try a different brand of detergent sometime.

I also think so.

I would generally recommend Bosch alternators, because the replacement parts are usually available for a long time, they are often of high quality, and the carbon brushes are easy to replace. With many Valeos, this is not the case. I'd rather not say anything about Hitachi...
