Hello,

ich habe gerade festgestellt, dass in meinem AHF 3 von 4 Glühkerzen kaputt sind. Furthermore,
Another one of the three glow plugs for the glow plug heater is also defective.

Can I use the same glow plugs for the glow plug heater as I would for the engine?
the engine. I've already searched the forum and Google, but I haven't found any clues.

2. Can I simply replace the glow plug of the glow plug heater, or is it necessary to have it done professionally?
Should I drain the coolant? It's the first spark plug, counting from the splash shield.

Thank you very much for all the answers.

Normally, these are identical glow plugs. In principle, you can remove them from the auxiliary heater without draining the cooling system. However, since the expansion tank is located higher up, I would recommend quickly screwing in the new glow plug after removing the old one to minimize water leakage. Afterwards, check the coolant level.

Probably not:
Screw out a spark plug and hold it against the heating flange.
In my AFN engine, the spark plug was too long between the threads and the tip to even fit into the heating flange (if I recall correctly).

If you don't release the pressure beforehand, you'll likely lose quite a bit through the glow plug hole...

Hi,

The spark plugs differ in length and thread size. The spark plugs in the cylinder head have an M10 thread, while the spark plugs for the auxiliary heater have an M12 thread.
And for the replacement, I wouldn't drain the coolant either. Just quickly remove it and reinstall it icon_cool.gif. Maybe convince someone to help you by having them ready with distilled water to refill immediately. This will save you the trouble of bleeding the system. Then, be sure to add the appropriate antifreeze afterwards icon_biggrin.gif.

greetings
Christoph.

It won't work! The thread, length, and connection of the positive terminal are different.

Hi,

If the cap on the expansion tank remains on, you can safely and quickly replace the water heater element without needing to add any coolant.
Recently, I had the scheduled maintenance for the tandem pump on my AXR engine: remove the spark plug to access the lower screw of the pump, replace the screw, and reinstall the spark plug (to avoid any misunderstandings: in the VW procedure, ALL screws are replaced!). I didn't notice any coolant leakage afterward.

Regards,
