Hello.

A report about a small hose that, under certain circumstances, can be crucial for saving a life. It's a vacuum hose connecting the vacuum pump to the power brake booster.
'During the timing belt replacement (90,000 km) on my Golf 4, TDI, ALH, manufactured in 04/99, we accidentally noticed the porous ends on the vacuum hose.'
It appears that this problem is not only present in the Lupo/Polo/Seat Arosa (recall), but also in the...
Golf 4 or other models. So far, I've only noticed this issue with the Golf 4 TDI; with my girlfriend's Golf 3, everything is fine.
The car is regularly taken for inspection, and none of the professionals noticed anything (damn it).
I don't want to know how many Golf 4s are still driving around with such a hidden defect.
If someone notices such a defect, they should not be dismissed by the workshop (there is no goodwill), but should contact Volkswagen service directly and report the issue. In my case, it worked, and I received goodwill coverage.
While it was only an amount of about 23 euros, the issue is also about the principle and the security aspect.
It seems that a safety-critical part is failing after about 3 years, and the fact that it's hidden can be quite alarming.
I hope I haven't scared anyone off, but it's always a good idea to take a closer look at something.

Gerhard.
