Hello,

After describing the problems with loud clicking and other noises in my AFN engine in various threads, and deciding to replace the cylinder head, I wanted to share the results here. I now have a new head, valves, hydraulic lifters, and gaskets, all installed with a used camshaft. The conclusion is that the engine now starts smoothly and runs quietly again! No more clicking, rattling, or other noises!

The autopsy of the engine, after 264,200 km, revealed surprisingly good condition! Even the mechanic was surprised by the minimal wear on the cylinder liners! All pistons were free of any damage, carbon buildup, etc. (The engine runs with a sports air filter). The cylinder walls still show honing marks, with slight wear on the third cylinder, but no signs of damage or scoring at top dead center. I added some engine flush additive at 60,000 km. Do you think it made a difference? The turbocharger has virtually no noticeable play in the shaft, truly very little within the normal range. The engine's oil consumption has been close to zero. Oil type: 5W40.

'The cylinder head had 2 small cracks near two exhaust valves and the fuel injector! The valves were clean at the bottom, but had heavy deposits at the top, near the exhaust valves (I've been driving with poor quality fuel for 10,000 km). Otherwise, a hydraulic lifter that was replaced 30,000 km ago failed the rocker arm test! It can be easily pushed down by hand 0.5-1 mm (immediately after removal, and there was still oil inside). Additionally, there are hard deposits directly on the cylinder head surface around the valve seats, which are attributable to the poor fuel.'

The condition of the camshaft is good to very good, I would say! No signs of wear, and the camshaft lobes are in even condition!

All in all, the exchange was worthwhile and, fortunately, quite affordable!

Negative! I didn't do that myself, I was only personally present when the head was removed! The timing belt was just replaced, and I didn't need to see that! I only have the old part here! But what are you particularly interested in?! Apart from the deposits, there isn't much unusual to see, and it's very difficult to get the camera into the exhaust channel! icon_biggrin.gif

Too bad.

The Hydros that were in the head that was recently removed were "cheap parts," while the new ones are "better."

Are there any manufacturers or brands that you would advise against based on your current experience?

I texted about them before! They're from FEBI! The ones in my current headlight also look like the FEBI ones! They have that black housing.

I don't have any experience with this, but I think that eventually, everything will just wear out! Specifically, things like the hydraulic valve lifters will become loose, etc. Currently, there's someone else who's having a similar problem with a 1Z engine, and they've already replaced the hydraulic lifters with original parts!

Basically, I'm not investing every single euro into the car anymore! I buy a lot from online retailers or accessory shops! The cylinder head 'only' cost 249 euros, and therefore, I'm sure nothing on it is VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) original. Everything is aftermarket: the cylinder head is MAHLE, the gaskets are Reinz, and the complete timing belt kit is from Gates for 45 euros, etc.! I just hope I can get another 150,000 kilometers of trouble-free driving, and that the engine lasts for 400,000 kilometers!

If you're referring to the old ZK, photos would be interesting (especially the deposits). I could also put the pictures online. Do you use 100% Pöl or a mixture? What did the ESDs look like?

Okay, I'll make a few more! I'm running 100% gasoline in the summer, but currently using a mixture. The spark plugs (ESD) are okay because I recently took them out and cleaned them of any deposits.
