Hi everyone,

My Passat Variant 3B AFN, with a PSI power box (icon_smile_thumb_up.gif6 kW), mileage: [insert mileage here].
It's missing about 50 horsepower 'from the bottom end.' The car has never really felt like a proper TDI, which is why I installed a new mass airflow sensor (MAF) and a PSI box at the beginning of the year. It improved after that, but not really significantly. (I took it to the VAG workshop, and the master mechanic said everything was fine, so I believed him).

Okay, so I just had a rental car because someone rear-ended my car (A4 Variant, 130 hp) - the difference in acceleration, especially from a standstill, was SO SIGNIFICANT that I'm sure something is wrong with my car. In the A4, I could really feel how the turbo kicks in around 1300 rpm and develops a lot of power - a feeling that I don't get in my Passat. Furthermore, in the A4, I only needed to move the accelerator pedal in the first third of its range to get going quickly. In my Passat, on the other hand, I have to press the pedal all the way to the last third of its range to get any decent acceleration.
The Passat's engine also sounds louder and 'rougher.'

Otherwise, the Passat exhibits the following 'behavior':

- Light smoke (rather pale) when starting the engine and driving away with little acceleration.
- slight (dark) smoke when running at full power (only visible in the headlights of following vehicles).
- starts well, doesn't jerk.
- Reaches a top speed of approximately 210 km/h according to the speedometer, but very slowly, and it's not consistent.
sometimes, in cold weather, it goes into emergency mode.
- Achieved a top speed of 195 km/h (as indicated by the speedometer) without the use of a trailer.
- is slightly below the target values for the DZR.
- During the last inspection, the following error codes were stored in the system's memory:
01268 035
Quantity setting - N146.
what was placed on the box.

- Sometimes the engine doesn't respond to the accelerator pedal, for example, I'm driving on the highway at a constant speed and then gently press the accelerator, but nothing happens. If I press the accelerator even further, there's suddenly a sudden surge of power. (This happens very rarely).

What would you suggest I do? Since the car is objectively performing reasonably well (in terms of maximum speed), and my descriptions of the problems are more subjective, I'm likely to be told by the workshop that 'everything is okay.' Unfortunately, I'm not very mechanically inclined and can't fix much myself.

Perhaps someone from around here (Bad Zwischenahn) can recommend a COMPETENT workshop?
Are there any possible explanations for the cause of the error?
Any other ideas?

Sorry for the long essay, but I wanted to convey as much information as possible.

Hoping for good advice/ideas,
Jens.

Hello Jens,

Since I don't notice anything particularly unusual in your descriptions, I would first check the usual suspects.
- Turbocharger pressure control / Turbocharger pressure system.
- EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)

Please perform a test drive where you accelerate with full throttle in 4th gear from approximately 1500 to 4000 RPM, and provide us with the boost pressure readings every 500 RPM.
Then you should check the turbocharger system for leaks, specifically looking for any signs of oil around the intake manifold.
If the leak is small, a significant amount of performance can be lost, even if the boost pressure values are within the acceptable range.
Check if, upon engine start, the VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) adjustment is engaged to the maximum boost pressure position (fully extended), or if the lever is not at the stop position when the engine is idling.
A particularly nasty error, because it's difficult to find, is a partially closed exhaust gas recirculation valve (a metal canister with a pipe connected directly to the exhaust manifold, located near the intake manifold).
If the AGR valve doesn't close completely, the turbocharger's boost pressure will be diverted to the exhaust instead of entering the engine.

If black smoke appears when driving at full throttle, the most common causes are usually insufficient air in the cylinders (due to issues like low boost pressure or leaks) or an excessively high fuel injection rate (e.g., a tuning box turned up too much).

Does the problem appear gradually or suddenly? In this forum, several people have already reported that incompetent workshops have incorrectly adjusted the timing when replacing the timing belt.

Best regards, Rainer.

Hello Rainer,

Thank you in advance for the quick response.

... hab' kein VAG-Com bzw. Diagnosestecker. Can I simply...?
Go to the VAG workshop and say, 'Could you please do a test drive?'
Do they do that?

Then you should check the turbocharger system for leaks, specifically whether there are any oil traces visible anywhere on the intake manifold system.
If the leak is small, a significant amount of performance can be lost, even if the boost pressure values are within the acceptable range.
Check if, upon engine start, the VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) adjustment is engaged to the maximum boost pressure position (fully extended), or if the lever is not at its limit position when the engine is idling.

... den Lader und die Druckdose hab ich wohl lokalisiert, aber das Gestänge geht nach unten weg - kann ich also nicht sehen. Can I?
When the engine is cold and not running, try to manually reach the linkage and move it by hand. Would you notice if it 'sticks,' or can you only detect it using a 'syringe' (presumably for injecting lubricant)?

A particularly nasty error, because it's difficult to find, is an exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR valve) that is not closing completely (a metal canister with a pipe connected directly to the exhaust manifold, located near the intake manifold).
If the AGR valve doesn't close completely, the turbocharger's boost pressure will be diverted to the exhaust instead of entering the engine.

'It doesn't produce that much smoke. And the device has no adjustable settings.'

Does your problem appear gradually or suddenly? In this forum, several people have already reported misaligned timing due to incompetent workshops during timing belt replacements.

... I bought the car used, and it already had a 'power dip' issue. Since I hadn't driven a TDI before, I didn't realize anything was wrong. Also, the timing belt has never been changed.

For a small donation to the coffee fund, this shouldn't be a problem.
Instead of using gear 4, you can also use gear 3, but then you'll have to type faster icon_smile.gif.
In the long run, the purchase or construction of a diagnostic adapter is worthwhile, primarily for time-saving reasons. For most applications, the demo version of VAG-COM is sufficient.

When the engine is cold and not running, try reaching for the linkage with your hand and moving it manually. Would you notice if it "jams," or can you only tell by using a "syringe"?

The adjustment lever on the turbocharger must move from stop to stop when starting the engine, and in idle, the adjustment rod must be fully pulled towards the vacuum actuator.
You can check it manually, but the lever feels a bit stiff.
You can check the vacuum chamber using either a syringe or by mouth; the syringe method is preferred. The vacuum chamber and the hose connected to it must be airtight.

... It doesn't produce that much smoke, actually. And the box has no adjustable settings.

Here's the tricky part: with a small amount of black smoke, it's difficult to determine the source: it could be from the fuel injectors, a leak in the turbocharger system, or an EGR valve that isn't closing completely, etc. It's definitely recommended to remove the EGR valve, clean it thoroughly, and check its proper function. Regarding "disabling the EGR valve and the consequences," please use the forum's search function.

Best regards, Rainer.
