Hi,
I'm looking for a guide on how to replace the gearbox in a Golf III. I want to replace my CYP gearbox with an ASD, but I'm not entirely clear about the work involved. Yesterday, I visited my local mechanic, and he told me that it would cost at least 200€ to replace the gearbox. Can I do this myself with basic tools and equipment?
Does anyone have a step-by-step guide with pictures, or something similar?
Greetings.
Reuselkopp.

Actually, it's quite simple to say:
- Disconnect everything from the transmission that connects it to the car (especially any cables).
- Remove the left drive shaft.
- Remove the starter.
- Attach the motor to the motor mount.
- Disconnect the gearbox from the support to the axle carrier.
- Loosen motor-gearbox screws.
- Possibly loosen the motor in its bearings.
- Remove the motor-gearbox screws.
- Take out the gearbox.

I don't think it sounds that bad. However, I don't have an engine support. Is it possible to lift or support the engine with a jack instead?
Are there any other tricks or techniques I should follow? My mechanic said it would be quite a delicate job to remove the gearbox because everything is so tight.
PS: You asked in my thread "Timing belt replacement tool making" where I'm from. Why do you want to know?

Hi,
I did that last year too.
Removing the loose transmission was difficult. There was only one position that allowed it to be removed relatively easily. To do this, the engine had to be slightly shifted.
Once you get into that position, things start to work out.
To support the engine, I built a steel frame that rests on wooden blocks placed on the fenders.
The gearbox is also very heavy. I had real trouble getting it up into place by myself.
Gruss Oliver.

I've only done it on the G2 and T4 models so far.
The G2 clearance is so tight that the engine has to be shifted significantly to the right in order to clear the gearbox and the "frame."
"Back in the day, I built the motor mounts myself: a thick 10x10cm wooden beam and a heavy-duty chain."
Here's the version of www.tdiclub.com (a4timingbelt.pdf). "a4" refers to the "Golf 4" - a fantastic 120-page PDF guide for the timing belt replacement on the G4.
