Hello,

I'm looking for a way to have the cavities of my Golf 3 Variant (manufactured in June 1995) inspected for rust (using an endoscope or similar).

If it's still worth it, I would then consider having a professional cavity sealing treatment done (but where?).

On the internet, I haven't unfortunately found any companies in the Vienna area that would do something like that.
Just one that expands without needing any verification; quote: "Drill holes in the right place, apply the foam, and you're done."
It didn't sound very good to me, even though it wouldn't have cost much.

Even my usual repair shop, where I always have the service done, couldn't offer any advice.

With a request for information,

Greetings.
Peter.

z.B. there: http://www.timemax.de/
It probably wouldn't be worth it for a golf club.

The cost is not the problem. I would be willing to pay a significant amount for it. icon_cool.gif
Since the car is well-maintained, the engine is still in very good condition (a 1Z engine, which is practically still in its "youth" icon_wink.gif with 220,000 km), and people often talk about electronic problems and overwhelmed workshops with the "newer" models, I would still like to drive it for another 6 to 8 years. icon_smile.gif

But Munich is a bit too far. Still, thank you for the tip.

Peter.

What are the benefits of cavity sealing for a Golf? From the Golf II onwards, the factory-installed sealing is already very effective. However, no aftermarket treatment can match the effectiveness of hot wax coating.

So, my Golf 3 started rusting quite rapidly. The driver's side door rusted through at the bottom after about 5 years, and the trunk lid started to develop blisters after about 8 years, not to mention the front fender edges.

Well, that's more of an exception. It also doesn't make much sense to seal the fenders.

Okay, let's talk about the car. The Golf has a wax sealant, and I would say that it's really effective and will last a long time. If you want to prevent rust on parts like the trunk or fenders, this is a good way to do it. Instead of spending money on such a sealant, put that money in the bank! A friend of mine had a Golf 2 from 1985. He sold it at the beginning of the year. It wasn't pretty, and it wasn't very well maintained, but it still hadn't rusted through!

What's wrong with 8 years? I'm considering whether to buy a new car now, or keep the Golf until it gets a "H" license plate... icon_biggrin.gif icon_rolleyes.gif (well, it would be really interesting to see what's left then).

I can confirm the issue with the edges of the fenders, and the paint is also starting to ripple in the middle of the driver's side door (and in a few other places). There's no visible paint damage, but it's happening on a flat surface. It seems the original paint job isn't very good.

However, I would like to have the cavities inspected so that I can better assess whether potential future major repairs would be worthwhile.

There are really very few problems with the cavities. I can confirm the rust on the tailgate and driver's side door, but that has other causes.

"On my old Golf III SP, which I received when I was 7 years old, the PVC underbody coating was peeling off in the area of the closure caps, the rear axle suspension, and along the bottom edges of the sills. This resulted in significant corrosion."
The only explanation I could find is that the car was frequently driven on the A4 autobahn near Dresden, where they used very aggressive de-icing agents on the roads during the winter.

These types of underbody protection can quickly lead to unnoticed corrosion.
Therefore, I would definitely check the vehicle thoroughly, and if necessary, make adjustments, especially in the area of the sealing plugs.
