Fuel Shutoff Valve (ALE) No Signal: Troubleshooting

Hello diesel mechanics!

"My Golf 3 (ALE) has been intermittently failing to start for a while now, and it's been happening more frequently lately. I'm almost afraid to even drive it out of the driveway, in case it doesn't start."
Meanwhile, I know why it won't start. There's no 12V reaching the fuel shut-off valve when I try to start it. However, there are no error codes stored!
Now I'm a bit at a loss...

How should I proceed to find the error?
I read something about a relay 109. Could it be defective? Or would that be stored in the error memory?

I would be very grateful for any helpful suggestions.

I replaced the relay today, and lo and behold, it's working again!!!
