In the Netherlands, yes, it's part of the vehicle inspection (APK). I don't know about Germany, but it would be interesting to find out. My TÜV inspector doesn't really pay much attention to it anyway; he hasn't checked it.

In Austria, the spare tire is also inspected.

Most of the tire damage (emergency service calls) I've seen in passenger cars and vans occurs on the sidewall, and that's where puncture repair spray just won't work! I'm just saying, watch out for curbs.

What I always notice in these discussions is that proponents of spare tires always bring up the example of a highway. I would never, ever stop on the shoulder of a busy highway, possibly even a clearway, to change a tire!
I'm not feeling suicidal after all. In fact, I'm being towed along the highway at a relatively brisk pace.
I also think puncture repair spray is terrible; it just ruins the rim and the tire. If the tire was still repairable before, it's no longer repairable after using that stuff. And the tire dealer will also be happy to verschandeln the rim.

Certainly, it's a risk to drive around without a spare tire and potentially get stranded on a country road. However, there are plenty of other parts that are statistically more likely to fail and cause a breakdown.

Hi, I actually prefer having a proper spare tire, but I've been considering replacing it with a puncture repair kit to save weight, and only putting the spare tire back in for longer trips.

But if the weight difference between the spare tire and the puncture repair kit is very small, I'll probably leave the spare tire in.

What is the weight of a spare tire with a 195/65 R15 tire, and how heavy is the puncture repair kit?

I also tend to prefer a spare tire because, in the event of a major tire damage, you can still drive normally. As a supplement to the options, the spare tire is missing, which I would prefer due to the extra space in the trunk and the lighter weight. Even with a spare tire, I can drive, for example, 700 km from Italy back home.

What do you think about that?

By the way, I've stored my spare tire (donut) and have a puncture repair kit in the car. Compared to the spare tire, the repair kit only takes up about 1/6 of the space, weighs a fraction of the weight, and leaves the rest of the compartment free for all the other things you should have on board (jack, first-aid kit, warning triangle, lights, etc.).

I, like x-world, believe that changing a tire on the highway, especially on the left side of the road, is quite dangerous.

I'm not saying that it's particularly sensible, responsible, or something to be emulated, but I know someone who used a spare tire for about six months, and they often drove 160 km/h on the highway.

I don't want to put tire repair kits with a compressor and sealant in my car. With the combined mileage of my own vehicles now exceeding 450,000 km, I've experienced a total of 3 tire punctures. Twice, I had foreign objects embedded in the tires, causing a slow leak, and most recently, I had a slow leak due to corrosion on the sealing surface between the (winter) tire and the steel rim.

In my current car, I replaced the spare tire (steel rim) with a temporary spare tire (from an Opel Astra-F) due to space and weight considerations. The rolling circumference matches, as I'm using the same original tire size.

Conclusion: I'm happy to take a spare tire instead of the standard tire, but a puncture repair kit is not an option for me.
