Hello everyone,
This is my first post, and I'd like to introduce myself.
My name is Thilo, I'm from near Hildesheim, and I work as a motor vehicle mechanic. I recently worked as a diagnostic technician in problem-solving at a large VW center.
In my free time, I'm involved in motorsport as a technician for GRT Gifhorn, and I'm also building a small racing car for the road. This is also why I'm starting this thread.
This car is a 1998 Seat Arosa with a 1.8T engine (225 hp) from an Audi S3 (engine code: BAM). I also installed the matching instrument cluster (8L0 920 932 N) and engine control unit (8N0 906 018 BH) for the engine. However, the STE (Engine Control Unit) and MSTG (Motor Steuergerät) are from different vehicles, and I don't have any learned keys, which is causing a WFS (Write Protection) problem.
Is there a way to completely reset both control units to their original factory settings, so that I can then create a new WFS with three new components (STE, MSTG, key)?
What about the 4-digit PIN in this case?
Thank you in advance for your answers!!! Gruß, Thilo

Hi Thilo,
the procedures differ depending on whether you have WFS version 2 or WFS version 3 installed. Due to the build year, you might still be using version 2, which simplifies things somewhat.

Hi!
So, the parts are definitely WFS3. It's a 2002 model year and I have the vehicle ID and the immobilizer ID.
Should a WFS2 work on it, or how should I imagine that?
And where can I get the PIN, it's only possible online with VAG?
Can the ECUs be completely reset to their original factory settings?
I'm asking this because VAG says that if two of the three WFS components are replaced, the third one must also be replaced.
Unfortunately, I've never tried anything other than VAG guidelines, so I'm really a beginner. Gruß, Thilo

Good question, I would have expected that either _all_ STG (Engine Control Unit) should be WFS2 _or_ WFS3 compatible; whether a mix is possible
The easiest solution would be to use a 'compatible' STG with WFS2 and a speedometer with WFS2.
IMHO, the 7-digit PIN is only available with the "Friendly" option, although I have also read somewhere about a corresponding "tool".

No, I don't want to get involved in that.
Both control units come from the same model (8L1S29), but not from the same car (i.e., different VINs). I was already aware that WFS3 was used there, and I also built the wiring harness so that everything works.
It's just about the fact that VAG says that if there are three non-related WFS parts (MSTG, STE, and key) that need to be replaced in order to enable the adaptation. That's why I want to know if it's possible to completely reset the STE and MSTG so that I can completely enter a new VIN and adapt the control units to each other. Gruß, Thilo

In most cases, it doesn't matter in WFS-3 if the parts come from different vehicles (different WFS IDs and VINs). The WFS IDs and VINs are taken over in the adaptation process, meaning the engine control unit takes over the data from the instrument cluster. A complete reset is possible, both in WFS-3 and in newer models with component protection, but these are techniques that are not intended for the general public, and are therefore probably not of interest to you, as your problems can be solved in the conventional way.
Whether the WFS login is 7-digit or 4-digit, it doesn't matter in the end, as is well known. The fact is that you need a specific login for each WFS ID, so in your case, a login for the engine control unit and another for the instrument cluster. There is also the possibility of querying WFS logins, not only online, but according to VW, also via FAX (GVO). In the event, there is still the possibility of having a speedometer adjuster/tuner read the corresponding logins from the two control units. |

Thank you very much for the detailed response.
Then I will continue to look for a motor control unit... because I can't afford a new one Gruß, Thilo
