Here's a quick poll for everyone: My friend has an AFN engine, and his turbocharger just failed today. Now, he's really set on installing a "bigger" one, for some reason. He already has a chip installed, but I still think the original turbo is perfectly adequate.

What do you think about it?

If he's determined to do it; which turbochargers are compatible with the AFN engine? If any modifications are needed, could you briefly mention them?

Thank you in advance for your opinions on this topic!

The GT1749VA model, specifically those from the AWX (longitudinal engine) or ASZ (transverse engine) variants, is most likely to be plug-and-play. I would advise against using the GT1749V model.

Basically, you would only need the seals and (very importantly) the quick-release coupling at the charger outlet.

Best regards, Nebelwerfer.

Hi,

Most stock air intakes are "too small" after tuning, leading to insufficient airflow and exhaust flow. While the engine produces more power, the overall tuning at its maximum power output is no longer optimal (due to unnecessarily high exhaust backpressure, which results in poorer gas exchange).
With a charger that is appropriately matched to the system's power requirements, the Pmax efficiency increases, meaning you can achieve a few more horsepower without increasing the amount of material used, which would otherwise be lost due to increased material stress.

It's no coincidence that VAG uses a custom-designed turbocharger for each performance level.

When it comes to engines that have been modified ("chipped"), I would always take the opportunity of a turbocharger failure to install a better-suited turbocharger, even if it meant accepting a larger turbo lag.

Hi,

In this case, I would definitely choose the GT1749VA.

Regards,
DJ.
