VW Caddy: Read Kilometer Stand from ECU

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a clear answer using the search function.

'I'm going to look at a VW Caddy for purchase for our company tomorrow. The car was first registered in 04/2004, it's a 2.0 SDI (new model), and according to the seller, it has 71,254 kilometers on the odometer. It's the second owner, and he has personally maintained the car during his ownership, so there's no current service history booklet.'
According to his statements, the clutch will soon need to be replaced (it seems to be slipping already), which makes me a bit suspicious considering the mileage. However, since the car was likely driven a lot in city traffic in Berlin, it would also be understandable.

My question is whether and how it is possible to professionally read the mileage from the engine control unit using Vag-Com 704.1.

I would be grateful for a prompt reply.

The engine control unit is likely an EDC16, and unfortunately, VAG-COM cannot be used to read the mileage from it (which I find very unfortunate).

The mileage information is stored in the engine control unit (ECU) and the CAN gateway. Accessing both requires some effort.

Also, even if it's not ECD 15/16 compliant?

What exactly do you mean? Gasoline engine?

I mean the naturally aspirated diesel engines!

Okay, I'm bringing this topic up again because I have a question about it. I'm planning to buy a Golf IV (PD variant with 100 or possibly 115 hp). I don't want to be misled by the mileage. Have I understood correctly that I can use VAGCOM to read the actual mileage from the engine control unit?

Nun ist die aktuelle Programmversion zum einen für den Vierer wahrscheinlich(?) nicht unbedingt nötig und zum anderen kost das ja auch alles. Vielleicht lässt sich ja eine ältere (hierfür ausreichende) Programmversion auftreiben. Oder Is that nonsense?

For me, everything is still new territory .
Are there any other software options that can do the same thing and that I can run on my laptop?
(It would be annoying to have to take the car to a VW dealership specifically to have it diagnosed.)

Why would that be a bad idea?
That would actually be a very good idea, because they can check in the database where and when the vehicle was serviced/repaired - ALONG WITH the corresponding mileage!

This way, you can even avoid the issue of selection bias and still be on the safe side.

Besides that, the engine control unit (ECU) used is an EDC15, and there are quite a few "tools" available for it.
Whoever can manipulate the mileage displayed on the instrument cluster (KI) may also have the ability to modify the vehicle's mileage recording system (MSTG).

I used to think it was easy for kids today to change the mileage reading in the car's computer, but it seems that the MSG system will likely update it anyway.

I'm basically already ready to buy such a diagnostic program; it seems necessary for cars these days, judging by what people are reading here. "I'll do it myself" apparently isn't quite enough anymore. But well, it all sounds quite interesting.

Driving out to Hinterduckelsdorf on the weekend to look at a car is already a hassle, so it's annoying to then have to drag it somewhere else to another VW dealership because you suspect they're being dishonest. It would be much easier to just connect a diagnostic tool to check for any errors. You should also be able to see something about potential problems right away... (?)
It should be a cheap car, being sold privately.

With VCDS, the updates are free, so forget about the older version. Anything you get there that's cheaper because it's older is definitely a cracked version .

I have no idea. I'll have to take a look. When reading the mileage, it says:
...something about being unavailable...

Then it is not implemented or not configured. Therefore, the number is quite interesting .
