Reading Faults - VW Climatronic from Hella

Self-diagnosis of the VW Climatronic from Hella.

Here are some tips on how to extract useful information from the VW Climatronic control panel. The special charm lies in the fact that no diagnostic equipment is required; for example, you can easily read one or more values from the Climatronic at the traffic light.

The description of the fault reading, actuator test, and onboard diagnostics refers to a component from the company Hella, as shown below. It can be found, for example, in the Golf IV and the Passat 3B/3BG. In these specified vehicles, identical control units from VDO are also installed, which are connection-compatible, but have different self-diagnostic requirements.

Reading Internal Error Memory:

Start the engine.
Activation of reading mode: Press and hold the "ECON" and " recirculation" buttons for at least 2 seconds.

Now, if a possible error exists, it will be displayed. Pressing "warmer" will display the next error. After all error codes have been displayed, "000" appears.

Is no error present, the code "444" will appear.

Clear Fault Memory: After the end of the error display (indicated by 000, meaning no further errors), the fault memory can be cleared: Press and hold the "ECON" button for at least 2 seconds. Confirmation message displayed: "444".

Exit Mode: Briefly press the "ECON" button.

Staff Member Test

All Climatronic elements are activated for testing.

Prerequisite:
Ignition on, engine off, vehicle stationary, voltage at terminal 15 < 15.5 V

Initiating the Stool Test:
Press and hold the "ECON" and "UMLUFT" buttons simultaneously (as shown in the display when reading the fault memory), while also turning the ignition on. Continue holding the button combination for at least 2 seconds. In the Climatronic display, all segments are now visible.

Description: In the now automatically running actuator test (duration approx. 30s), the actuators are controlled according to the time, as defined. Furthermore, the periphery of the control unit (sensors, motors, fresh air blowers, pressure switches) is diagnosed, provided that the diagnostic requirements are met (see diagnostic manual), and the actuators are controlled by the system software before and after the actuator test. During the actuator test, all buttons are locked and all segments on the LCD are activated. An initiated actuator test cannot be terminated via the keyboard or the VAG tester. After completing the self-test, the control unit automatically switches to the "Read Diagnostic Memory" mode (see above).

Exit Mode: Briefly press the "ECON" button.

OnBoard Diagnostic

OBD can also be accessed while the engine is running and during driving.

The diagnostic process begins by simultaneously pressing the "ECON", "cooler", and "Fan smaller" buttons.
Using the "warmer" and "colder" temperature buttons, the diagnostic channels are scrolled through.

Note:

There are various channel assignments. If a valid speed signal can be read on channel 16 during the onboard diagnosis, then the following description applies. Other channel assignments sometimes use channel 17 or 19 for the speed signal. Then the following list does not apply.

Depending on the vehicle, not all of the listed channels may be available.

In my Golf IV from 07/2002 with Climatronic C 2.0.0, part number 3B1 907 044 C, the channels described further down in this article - as far as it is verified - match the displays.

System Error

Was wurde im letzten Fahrzyklus erkannt? Alle Segmente auf dem LCD blinken beim Einschalten der Zündung für 15 Sekunden mit einer Frequenz von 2 Hz.

Following errors detected in the stationary state (Error counter = 50) lead to the system error:

- VAG Tester function. 04 Basic setting not initiated
- VAG Tester function. 07 Parameter coding not performed
- External sensor (intake channel) and external sensor (bumper) are defective
- Button / Sensor defective
- Internal sensor defective
- Reference voltage (ext.) Sensorspg.)

Specific channel guidelines

The speed displayed on Channel 16 is not overly accurate, despite its digital display. It primarily serves to regulate the amount of incoming fresh air to be adjusted to the vehicle's speed - nothing more and nothing less.

Using the evaporator temperature provided in Channel 40, it is possible to roughly determine whether the cooling performance of the system is still functioning correctly. Regardless of any subjective feelings of the occupants, an objective measurement of the achieved temperature is possible without the need for later mixing with warm air. The evaporator temperature should also reach single-digit ranges within a few minutes at the "Lo" setting, even at maximum heat, and should reach a steady value of around 3 °C within a maximum of 30 minutes of continuous operation.
