So far, with the 3M product, I'm still bothered by the somewhat "bulky" design of the lighting unit.

There is also a flat SLN that uses self-illuminating film (like in the Phaeton), which is the G-Elumic ( http://www.leuchtendes-nummernschild.de/ ) - however, there have already been reports from MT about a rapid, partial failure of the illuminated surface. So far, these issues have been resolved under warranty.

3M is also expected to release a thinner version by the middle of the year, and I personally am waiting to see what that looks like.

Exactly - there's no need for anything else. The excessively bright taillights of newer vehicles are already quite enough. Let's see when the first reversing light with xenon technology and cornering lights will be introduced.
