Steering lock cylinder is sticking/jamming; key cannot be inserted; S-contact is not switching off; steering lock is not engaging; warning buzzer for headlights is not functioning; control of interior light is not functioning; remote control is functioning sporadically; radio/navigation is not switching off.
Cause:
The lever of the steering lock cylinder does not fully return to its resting position after the key is removed. A possible cause is a collision between the locking mechanism of the ignition switch and the lever. Another cause was identified as a restriction of the lever's movement due to excessive grease on the contact surface between the steering lock and the steering column lock.
Furthermore, damage to the paving stone within the lock cylinder can occur through the introduction of a wedge.
Solution:
Check the steering lock for excessive play and, if present, replace it. If no excessive play is found in the steering lock, it can remain in the vehicle. In this case, check the steering lock for excessive greasing in the area around the lock cylinder. Only a very thin layer of grease should be present in this area.
If there are any lumps or accumulations of grease on both the edge and the contact surface of the steering lock cylinder/steering wheel lock, these must be removed. This should be done by removing the excess grease with a suitable object without damaging the component. Under no circumstances should the removal of the fat be carried out using chemical agents (dilution, brake cleaner, etc.).
Since damage to the locking cylinder cannot be ruled out, it must definitely be replaced. When replacing, pay attention to the installation of modified locking cylinders. Do not perform any welding during assembly.
Under no circumstances should attempts be made to resolve the issue by adding more grease! Tschüss
