Creaking or rapid rattling sounds from the shift cables when changing gears or riding over road imperfections.
Cause:
Due to relative movements between the engine components and the vehicle body during load changes or when driving over road imperfections, the shift cables also move relative to the guide in the fender. In this configuration, a noticeable dry friction sound occurs at the rubber grommet and on the edge protection of the frame's front panel.
Solution:
The extension of the shift and selector cable is not necessary.
Remove the right-hand side panel of the center console.
Lubricate the shift and selector cable at the injection molding wall passage with silicone grease No. [Number]. G 000 405 A2.
Apply polyurethane grease No. [number] to the felt pad glued to the edge protector. G 052 142 A2.
A confusion between the two types of grease will lead to a quick recurrence of the noise complaints.
If the surface of the shift or selector cable has become rough due to dry friction, these cables must not be replaced. The cables should only be replaced if they show signs of being cut or if the surface material is visibly worn.
If the adhesive felt pad or the protective strip underneath it is damaged, it must be replaced.
Wipe cloth: No. 447 857 991 J
Edge protector: No. 701 947 149 A. Tschüss
