Reverse gear not / difficult to engage - bzw. - difficult to disengage.
Cause:
1. Due to water ingress at the gear shaft's roller bearing or through the gearbox vent, the ball head/shift rod for the reverse light switch becomes corroded and difficult to move. The reverse light switch is actuated by the gear shaft's cam track. Therefore, it is difficult to engage reverse gear due to the difficult-to-move ball head/shift rod.
2. Damage in the form of an indentation on the ball head/shift rod for the reverse light switch within the gearbox housing.
Solution:
1. a. Unscrew the switch for the reversing light one full turn.
b. If no improvement occurs, look for other possible causes.
c. If the reverse gear can now be engaged smoothly, proceed as follows.
d. Remove the gear-side gear lever actuation with the gear lever.
e. Check the bearings and return spring of the gear lever and the switch for the reversing light for corrosion.
f. If there is only slight surface corrosion, replace only the switch for the reversing light; otherwise, replace the entire gear-side gear lever actuation (gear lever housing) with the gear lever.
2. a. Check the switch for the reversing light in the control unit for damage (deformation) on the ball head / shift lever.
b. If damage is found, replace the reversing light switch.
c. After that, check the manual operation of the gear shift lever.
• After installing the new switch, the problem must be resolved.
If this is not the case, please check the gear-side shift lever for damage.
Example: A retaining pin in the shaft of the gear shift lever. Tschüss
