Performance issues, black smoke, soft jerking during acceleration, engine stalls,
Maximum speed is not reached

Error codes 00575 or 00553 in the fault memory or 17656 in the fault memory.
Image change:
Cause change:
1. Various process uncertainties.
2. Mass airflow sensor in certain manufacturing periods.
3. Turbocharger (also in intermittent performance issues with 81 kW engines).
4. Low-quality rapeseed methyl ester fuel. Air in the fuel system.

Original solution change:
- Removal of the spring band clamp on the turbocharger inlet. Removal. - Mounting aid for air intake duct
- From 08.95 for Passat 4 vehicles
- From 10.98 for Golf 4 vehicles
- Careful routing of
- Vacuum control lines.
- From 08.96
- Air intake hoses with white embossed marking.
- From 06.96
- Mass airflow meter with manufacturer's marking.
- From 16/94 with blue dot marking until 23/96. After that, the blue dot marking is no longer valid.
- Modified turbocharger for 81 kW engine.
- From '98
- KD solution change:
- 1. Vehicle inspection for:
- Added exhaust system and catalytic converter. Blocked air intake (before the air filter or intake screen).
Damaged, torn, or improperly tightened
intake hoses.
Disconnected, incorrectly connected, damaged, or bent
control lines for exhaust gas recirculation and intake air.
Electromagnetic control valve for boost pressure regulation (only in
case of rough running complaints).
Turbocharger (only in case of power and black smoke complaints).
For Passat 4 TDI vehicles from 5.95 onwards, use of spring band clamps f
the installation of the intake air pressure hoses between the
turbocharger and the intake air cooler. For this purpose, a spring clamp is used on the turbocharger's pressure fitting. Since the turbocharger's pressure fitting has not yet been designed for use with a spring clamp, a screw clamp must still be used here.
For Passat 4 vehicles with spring clamps for mounting the air intake pipes, the spring clamp on the turbocharger's pressure fitting (the connection where the air is directed to the air-to-water cooler) must be removed and replaced with a screw clamp - ET-No. N 024 507.4.
Remove all lubricants from the air intake pipe and hose connections in the air intake system.
2. Fe Read the mass airflow sensor data.
If the error combination 00575 and 00553 is stored in the fault memory, the mass airflow sensor should not be replaced, as error 00553 is only a secondary error.
Troubleshooting in this case should be carried out as with individual entry 00575.
If error 00553 "improbable mass airflow sensor signal" occurs, replace the mass airflow sensor if the manufacturing date is before 16/94 (the manufacturing date can be read from the mass airflow sensor in its installed state).
ET only supplies parts in the latest condition.
The mass airflow sensor should never be replaced in cases of sporadic errors. Checking the intake air mass according to the repair manual at full load
If no error is displayed in the fault memory and no other error is found according to the repair manual, replace the air mass sensor if the manufacturing date is before 16/94.
3. If no error exists after steps 1 and 2, replace the turbocharger. After each turbocharger damage, inspect the air intake lines for leaks. A leaking valve can be the cause of a turbocharger failure.
4. If error 17656 is stored in the fault memory, there is a possibility that the fuel filter is clogged. It may be caused by unsuitable rapeseed methyl ester fuel. Do not perform complex troubleshooting of the fuel injector or diesel fuel pump before a clogged filter can be ruled out. There is also the possibility that air has entered the fuel system. Often, the fuel level indicator unit is defective. Furthermore, the entire fuel system should be checked for leaks.
