P0501 Error Code: Causes and Fixes

Hello!

I have a fault code P0501, which indicates an implausible speed signal, and the check engine light is on as a result.

Can someone tell me what the consequences are if the engine control unit (ECU) doesn't receive a speed signal? Does the ECU need this signal for learning values, etc.?

The engine is a 1.8T AUQ from a Volkswagen Bora.
